On Tuesday I gave a ten-minute update on where global fossil CO₂ emissions are at.
Certainly methane emissions are important. But I don't normally include them on a chart showing fossil CO₂ emissions.
I've typed "fossil CO₂ emissions" a million times over the last 15 years. Sometimes I forget in haste. The graph above is CO₂ emissions from oxidation of fossil fuels only.
It's a reasonably accurate measure of CO₂ emissions. Clearly not of total GHG emissions.
It's CO₂.
Leadership is, but there's no indication at this stage that any of their data are affected by this.
2025 was unusual in that generation from coal increased, largely because gas prices were high. Gas prices have since declined in the US and we're seeing coal power generation declining again and gas increasing. Net result is lower CO₂ emissions in the power sector in 2026.

The US EIA is currently forecasting US fossil-fuel emissions to drop by 1.7% in 2026.
