When people don’t know what to believe, they believe nothing. “They all lie.” “Both sides are corrupt.” The goal isn’t persuasion—it’s disillusionment. Make truth feel futile. Make facts feel fake. Get people to give up—and the GOP wins by default through disengagement.

16/ That’s Hungary’s warning, and its lesson. Elections can remove the ppl directing propaganda. They can’t instantly undo years of fear, captured institutions, or damaged professional judgment. Defending democracy means protecting independent journalism now & rebuilding what political control broke

12/ Even journalists who welcomed liberation struggled with responsibility. Under the old system, managers decided what could run. Now reporters had to make their own calls and stand behind them. Some still feared publishing perfectly legitimate stories. Political control had become a habit of mind.

9/ Those pages matter because propaganda isn’t always a politician barking orders on camera. It can be an editor quietly killing a story, a manager removing a name, or a reporter learning which facts are too dangerous to print. Eventually, people stop waiting for orders. They censor themselves.

BEZOS: I do like SI, because 'artificial' is not a very flattering thing. Like, nobody wants an artificial sweetener, artificial flavoring.

The DHS Secretary is riffing on the “great replacement theory” - a white nationalist conspiracy theory that holds the elites (or other conspirators - in this case, “socialists”) are set on changing society through immigration and illegal voting.

The GRT is everywhere on the American right now.

Either there’s rule of law or there’s not. Either we are defined by a system of justice that holds the guilty accountable or we aren’t. Either we have a democracy that limits abuse to define our public life and the rights of citizens or we have a country collapsing into strongman authoritarianism.
