My god. A Virginia data center ran backup diesel generators full blast for 24 hours, creating a giant cloud of toxic smoke that choked its human neighbors. The government claimed there was nothing they could do.

Hello People Who Teach!

If you have ever assigned The House Archives Built [in essay or book format] in a class, could you share with me the department/class title/class type if the title is very mysterious?

I'd appreciate it! Less than I appreciate the actual teaching but still a hearty amount!

“You don’t know if they’re law enforcement officers or just attacking someone on the street. And when it comes to ice it begs the question, what’s the difference?”
I am angry tonight.

Because tonight ICE shot a New Yorker. They shot a New Yorker while his five year old child was in the car.

ICE makes this city less safe.

We want them out. Now.

Maybe we should measure the "strength" of the economy not by the stock market but by the length of the line at our local food bank?

I am not saying everybody has the ability to follow this path, but: I was uncertain of my MMR status. I went into the CVS app, scheduled a booster, walked in, got one, walked out, paid nothing.
And: Make sure everyone you know who can be vaccinated is vaccinated. Anyone who isn’t certain should get an update. Measles as an infant can be fatal, either immediately or within a few years; but measles as a naive adult has a much higher risk of death. It’s one of the Great Plagues on purpose.

@aoc.bsky.social just put out a great statement on AI. Refreshing to see a major politician on the left nail this.

"Silicon Valley billionaires want us to believe that Al robots will destroy humanity. But the biggest threat to humanity are the tech oligarchs themselves."

I occasionally get to remind people of the system I use for converting between Celsius and Fahrenheit. It won't give you ever temperature, but it seems like a good baseline to help you figure out how hot or cold something is.

04 C is 40 F
16 C is 61 F
28 C is 82 F
40 C is 104 F

MMR is 97% effective.

BUT:
- Some may not mount a robust enough immune response to vax for a variety of reasons
- Protection CAN wane if there's been a major immune disruption, though this is rare
- Most pertinent: intense, prolonged exposure to someone with measles can supersede protection

This is not what slop refers to. I'm not being purely academic about this. The conflation does matter. Because this is a type of conglation that people do to make any reasonable critique of "A.I." seem overwrought. "Oh they said the same thing about the internet!" And it is not true.
I'm in my early 40s and I definitely remember Wikipedia being treated *as the equivalent* of slop (i.e., untrustworthy) in my final high school/early college years.

It took a couple of years to go from "don't use Wikipedia anyone can put anything there" to "use Wikipedia as a first step."
