Otherwise they're just advising the Democrats to behave as if climate change weren't happening — to become, in essence, climate deniers. Which, again, is both morally abhorrent and strategically very stupid.

But whatever they think, all the climate hushers should really be forced to account, in their arguments, for their disregard for any scientific timeline for decarbonization and their implicit dismissal for the harms of global heating.

Maybe they don’t think global warming over 2°C degrees will be dangerous to people in America. (It will.)

Maybe they think we can deal with heating with solar geoengineering and CDR, so there's no reason to phase out coal, oil, or gas? (😬)

Who knows what they think.

So anyone who says that Democrats don't need to hold on to climate as an issue is also implicitly saying we don’t need to be decarbonizing fast enough to halt global heating at a relatively safe level.

Getting to net zero emissions requires virtually phasing out fossil fuels and renovating our economy to be clean and new.

Not tackling climate change, but passing marginally beneficial policy like free transport (would that could be passed, of course!), is not going to get us there.

As to the second reason it's terrible to counsel the Democrats not to talk about climate change:

Climate change is real, it's dangerous, and it needs to be fixed now.

Later is too late.

But, look, it's not complicated: it is good politics to take a position that the majority support and that your opponent is absolutely terrible on.

Why on earth wouldn't the Democrats NOT want to keep climate change in their arsenal?

Does none of this seem as plausible as the claim that working class voters don't care about climate change?

That's because, as @hannahritchie.bsky.social has shown, that bias is already baked in to everyone's thinking.

The people that make these climate-hushing arguments love the polls that ask Americans to rank the issues that are most pressing to them right now.

So misleading! Obviously climate will not feel like #1 now (or for the near future), but voters have strong feelings about climate and energy!

Leaving aside campaigning in red states, the argument that Democrats should drop climate is wrong.

1) It is dumb to drop a platform that the majority support & that your opponent is absolutely terrible on.

2) We do need to get to net zero now in order to halt heating at a relatively safe level.
