As a society none of Trump’s insanity is impossible to parse or react to. The problem is that our feckless elites are scared of humiliating themselves by expressing an appropriate amount of alarm, which dumps the burden on to the rest of us, where it becomes unmanageable
Part of the problem is that if you were to have the proper reaction to even 10% of this it would leave you unable to function normally. If nothing else you end up repressing stuff just because fully experiencing it is impossible to do all at once.
It’s paralyzing! The correct, normal, healthy reaction to something like this is profound alarm. But that’s foreclosed because expressing alarm is considered déclassé. So.. how are we supposed to react? Treat lunacy as normal? And so the normalization of this nonsense undermines our whole politics.
