The Oxford English Dictionary gives this (obsolete) definition of 'visited':

Afflicted with illness; attacked by plague or other epidemic.

Today is World Teachers’ Day

During the First World War many male teachers joined the armed forces. As a result, the convention that, on marriage, women resigned from teaching posts was relaxed.

Thank you to Derbyshire Archaeological Society for donating and cataloguing drawings of some inclines, structures, equipment and other elements of the Cromford & High Peak Railway, which were rescued from High Peak Junction when the line closed in the 1960s.

Made for Francisco Morozini of Venezia (1619-1694). One could pull the silk bookmark and fire the weapon while the book was closed.

This artifact is housed at the Museo Correr in Venezia, Italia.

This is the oldest sample of Hebrew text with European musical notation. It's an autograph manuscript of Obadiah the Proselyte, a Norman-Italian priest who converted to Judaism in 1102. He traveled to Egypt and Syria, using his knowledge of Gregorian Chant to record Hebrew poetry. @theul.bsky.social

Lovely annual visit to Hereford Cathedral & its stunning library. Great exhibition inspired by the 550th Caxton anniversary, including an incunable (printed in 1473) given to the cathedral in 1478.

1. David Bentley was born in 1918, Doncaster, Yorkshire. He was the son of David Bentley and Elsie May Stevens. In 1921 the family lived at 28 The Crescent, Woodlands, Doncaster.
He married Rose Anne McGarry in 1942, Yeadon, Yorkshire. #armthorpewarmemorial #WW2

This larnax (or terracotta chest-shaped coffin) was found in a Minoan tomb. They were designed to look like domestic wooden storage containers, an echo of life in death. This one has painted decoration (albeit faded) but an octopus is clearly visible - a common Minoan motif.
