Most people contesting the definition today are also denying that Israel has committed huge systematic atrocities—honest debate about definition has been replaced by a campaign to defuse criticism of Israel. And although the ICJ made a meal of ‘intent’ over Bosnia, it did find genocide at Srebrenica

But it’s hardly an open and shut case. Atrocities & egregious war crimes do not equal genocide ipso facto. See 2007 ICJ case on Bosnia- insufficient evidence of intent on most atrocities. “genocide denial” sounds misguided/misdirected if aimed at people contesting the definition.

This reposting of my article from 2025 reminds us that recognition of Israel’s genocide has been a strong consensus for well over a year now—which explains Israel’s systematic campaign to discredit the view and provide cover for its atrocities.
From the archives: The dam of Gaza genocide denial has well and truly broken. While Israel’s supporters in the West still reject the charge, many media outlets are coming off the fence. Genocide scholar @martinshaw.bsky.social reflects on the shift.

Although @ZackPolanski.bsky.social fell short in Holborn, the Greens still represent the Britain’s best chance in 100 years—indeed ever—for a serious electoral force to the left of Labour, I argue on Substack, drawing on an important new book on the Polanski effect by @russellwarfield.bsky.social.
