Humans kill an estimated 100 million sharks every year.

Key Breakdown & Facts

Rate of Deaths: This equals roughly 274,000 sharks killed per day, 11,000 per hour, or about 3 sharks every second.

Shark Fin Trade: Around 73 million of these deaths are driven directly by the shark fin trade (primarily for shark fin soup).

Other Causes: Millions more die from accidental capture (bycatch in commercial fishing nets), meat harvesting, oil, cartilage, and illegal poaching.

Comparison: While humans kill roughly 100 million sharks annually, unprovoked shark encounters result in an average of only about 5 to 6 human fatalities worldwide each year
