The petition does not say "don't build new homes", just that there should also be more public ownership of housing to take housing out of speculative, for-profit provision. Building new homes does not make them more affordable if they are part of the financialised, speculative housing market.

Simply building more houses in a financialised and speculative market will not solve the issue on its own. Among many others, some good resources on this are @jryancollins.bsky.social's book "Rethinking the Economics of Land and Housing" www.progress.org/wiki/ryan-co...
But part of the problem is that housing and land are treated as speculative assets and that land ownership is still hugely unequal. Bringing more housing into public or collective ownership is important to make housing more affordable.
