This is a pretty good, succinct explanation of the problem with 2026 effective altruism's pivot from bednets to AI doom risk:

Again, I would genuinely care less about all of this if not for the fact that proponents of weirdo rationalist/EA ideas about how preventing AI from killing us all is The Most Important Thing are now incredibly powerful and wealthy, and will likely get way more so with the Anthropic/OpenAI IPOs.

Anyone out there predicting that primary care will be replaced by AI: fine, worried healthy people can talk to bots sometimes, probably.

But have you ever tried managing care or being a caregiver for someone who has multiple conditions and specialists? Like, 25% of Americans?

"The proposed channel, which Chinese officials have not publicly agreed to, would allow Bessent and He to contact one another in the event of an artificial intelligence related incident with national security implications."

So not a proper hotline like the Washington-Moscow messaging system, then.

EXCLUSIVE: Scott Bessent proposed a new AI safety “notification mechanism” during a Sunday meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

But the proposal is far simpler than the term suggests: an open line of communication between the two officials.

Artificial intelligence is on the agenda when leaders from the United States and China meet this week. But with little consensus on a path forward, expectations are limited.

Keep your expectations low for this week’s visit of XI to the United States when it comes to AI regulation.

But be aware of how high are the stakes for humanity.

From @timnitgebru.blacksky.app and me on what we should take from the 2026 summer of AI hype:

Don’t be fooled by this summer of AI hype
Breathless claims about AGI and new capabilities fall apart pretty quickly under scrutiny.
