“BOWDOIN BITS IN BEIGE” The Tuesday Afternoon Sketchmob spent a delightful September afternoon on the campus of Bowdoin College in Brunswick ME. I sketched a few “view nits” with a MUJI fountain, pen, a grey alcohol marker and a white gel pen in a 9“ x 12“ Borden & Riley #840 Kraft Pad.

Ok well…the cover design has gotten worse, but this is what I used to use to draw all my comics on. It’s very very smooth but has more heft to it than most marker paper.

I’m kind of obsessed with Borden & Riley 234 Paris Paper for Ink and Pens. It’s very smooth, no tooth at all, a dream to draw on. They might have heavy weights if you need it to handle a bunch of water

This is the one I used to use for copics when I colored traditionally with them. It’s made for inking specifically so I believe it would hold up (super similar feel to Deleter). I’ll be testing it out tonight since I still have a ton of it.

But no idea on current day prices :/

I decided to test my various inks on my various papers. First up? Borden &Riley Paris Paper for Pens. Don't ask me how this image came about. It's a deer exploding into a shrub. From all the inks tested, And I have no idea where I got that ink, but it is lovely! ProArt India Ink with a Brause nib.

More specifically, this is Borden & Riley Paris Paper for Pens with ProArt India Ink using a Brause No. 361 nib.

Birthday gifts from Lewd! I got #fourcandies multi pens and highlighters! I used them with my copics, I'm surprised how resilient these pens are! 💁‍♀️💫

but tbh it's just a lot of layering! I got a nice paper that takes markers really well for layering; Borden & Riley Paris Paper. It's super smooth and I didn't really have any bleeding problems. happy to provide any further specifics if you like but I don't think I did anything super special! 😅

Testing inks and paper for Epiphany

Kind of shocking how the 'bleedproof paper for pens' bleeds/fuzzes more than basic smooth bristol

Also Higgins is definitely like...grey. add a little water and it could be a nice mid-tone

Hey I use this pad of paper to print off my inks for traditional colour and have never had a problem with smudging! (on an ink jet) I just let it dry for a few minutes.

That makes it so much easier!

Since you're looking for paper that's at least 17x22 you have a bunch more options. Canson makes a pad of 19x25 recycled bristol, and Strathmore sells individual sheets of bristol at the same size. Borden & Riley sells their bristol and Paris paper pads that big, too.

A lot of art supply manufacturers have the same parent company.

Liquitex and Winsor & Newton are owned by Colarts

FILA group owns a 27 brands like Strathmore, Canson, Arches, and Dixon

Chartpak has 18, like Molotow, Borden & Riley, Grumbacher, and Webber.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

I'll start: Amazon makes more money out of their Cloud services than out of their e-commerce platform.

I find paper makes a big difference!
I use a paper called "Borden & Riley Paris Paper" and the markers blend so well on it.

I recently finished "The Only One Left" by Riley Sager. I don't read horror/thriller too often but the New England setting and historical timeline (for the one POV) appealed to me. It's obviously inspired by Lizzie Borden, which was another part that reeled me in.

Personal grump:

I have been using Borden & Riley ha’penny sketchpads at 2.5”x3.5” as my daily pocket To Do for years (because writing it down & crossing it off works for me) and I’m on my last one. Guess I will be learning ring binding here real soon because I need paper, not card stock.
