We should have Kirkmas’d the CSA’s ’famous generals’
This is a neat thread (and the replies) but I think I have to disagree.
First, the number disparity isn't that large for most of the war, but also it is not clear to me that the CSA's strategic position demanded the destruction of the Army of the Potomac.
What it required was a failure of US will.

I am going to defend Robert E. Lee, and point out that he was trying to accomplish the strategic objective of decisively defeating an army twice his size and much better equipped; he could not stand on the defense because he would be worn down by attrition, and the CSA's war goals required victory.
Lee was always going to attack though, because that was his ONLY tactical move... except at Fredericksburg and that was probably only because he simply couldn't attack.
It worked out great... as long as the Union command literally handed him victory on a silver platter.
