No argument here on that. And I’m sure you’re aware of the subtleties. Just wanted to point out for those who may not follow as closely that many of the claims attached to Chenoweth’s research are not made by them but by others who want to believe it can be that simple.

You've heard about Erica Chenoweth's groundbreaking research on nonviolent people's movements—how just 3.5% of the population engaging in sustained protest can topple an authoritarian regime. Join us at 3pm ET to talk with Erica about No Kings 10/17, and what we need to prepare for after that.
TODAY: We’re looking forward to chatting with our friend and famed social movements expert @chenoweth.bsky.social about the next No Kings on October 17, organizing to stop Trump’s election sabotage, and much more. Join us to submit your questions for Erica: www.mobilize.us/indivisible/...

Kristin Chenoweth's ability to hit those notes straight off the cuff is something else. Clearly not something most of us can replicate, even with practice. #performance #talent

Was Kristin Chenoweth's career really in such a place that she had to do a reality competition show
September 18, 2026 at 8:58 PM
4/10

The wider literature is more careful:

→ Everall et al. 2025, 59 tipping events: critical mass 10–43 %
→ Otto et al., PNAS 2020, tech adoption: 17–20 %
→ Chenoweth's 3.5 %: mass movements, other mechanism

Tipping is a pattern. The height is context. One number is one paper.

When America fully commts, she will do so because she sees no viable alternative.

I still see a National Strike & Erica Chenoweth's 3.5% Rule going into effect, but before this can happen, the American people must be galvanized by some 'peak' event—like, say, a stolen election, but still TBD.

If the election is seen by the American people as stolen, we will likely experience a National Strike and see Erica Chenoweth's 3.5% Rule go into effect.

OTOH, if he is unable to steal the election (and loses) is also of concern given what we know about him and Jan 6th.

Takes one to know one, right?

There‘ve been some US general strikes, the 1st & largest was the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. Yes it’s old news but era was tumultuous with many parallels to current US oligarchy.

Google Chenoweth’s “3.5% rule” for an idea of what can force real change.

The "3.5% Rule": Chenoweth's data suggests that no government has survived if just 3.5% of its population actively and consistently participated in nonviolent protests or civil disobedience.

I had completely forgotten that she was I that! I haven’t watched it since you introduced me to it ages ago. The main things have stuck in my mind were the carefully designed color palettes for the sets and Kristen Chenoweth’s performance. I’ll have to revisit it sometime.

Watch Prof Erica Chenoweth’s TED talk. Quite against her expectations, her research showed: Nonviolent civil disobedience is not fast, but usually works to defeat authoritarians. (Violent movements usually fail.) Americans have barely gotten started.

It doesn't have to be a General Strike, it can just be deliberately cutting spending and slowing things down at work.

But Chenoweth's research on the 3.5% tells us that direct action by the public is an even more important part of the solution.
August 29, 2026 at 11:48 AM
Per Erica Chenoweth’s research: no major nonviolent movement has failed when it actively engaged at least 3.5% of the population.

Somehow our neighbours to the south, where 1/3 of the population still backs a fascist pedophile autocrat, can’t get even 1% of their population to march for “No Kings”.

You may have encountered Erica Chenoweth’s work and the 3.5 percent rule, though there is far more to her research than the pop science version has shared. Selectorate theory might be familiar if you are a CGP Grey

We print them and mail them to you.
Over 7 million cards have gone out. The goal is 12 million — about 3.5% of the country. Erica Chenoweth's research on a century of civil resistance found no campaign that reached 3.5% ever failed.

That's the whole operation. signsofjustice.com/wethepeople

Chenoweth’s answer on whether property damage is violence is “it depends.” And I think that’s correct

in googling for chenoweth's specific takes on property damage i discovered there's a DebateAnarchism subreddit. oh my god

Have you ever looked into Erica Chenoweth's 3.5% Rule? It has pretty convincing data showing that peaceful revolution is actually far more effective.

I wrote an article on it last year that covers some of the basics of it.
