#Cod&chips
I used to enjoy a Fish & Chip supper when I lived in London, it was cheap and filling.

Not so cheap any more, £25.50 for Cod & Chips, not a poor mans supper any more 😲

Anyways, this video is a history for London's Fish & Chip trade. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvZ2...

Evening Ian.

I might have fish tonight, as you did last night.
I Bought a thick piece of cod today.

I'll make up some beer batter then fry it.

Chips for me though, I don't like hash browns.

I bet you're having pizza tonight like I did last night😀

I thought it was Cod n Chips in that High Class, Exclusive Sea Food Restaurant all those years ago. 😀

I can't get battered cod or haddock here so I have to buy the fish and make my own batter.

Then I do thick cut chips cooked in beef dripping and always put loads of salt, ginger and Tommy sauce on.

Tried some cape cod chips that were some limited flavor of lemon and butter. Tasted like ass. Herr's chips came in clutch tho. I never knew ketchup could be such a good flavor of chip.

Salmon, Halibut and Cod are all local fish to Seattle. So you can't really go wrong. My bias leans towards Salmon and Halibut (of course for fish and chips it would be Halibut over Cod, but both are yummy).

Try Little Chinooks. They have Salmon, Halibut and Cod (traditional British Fish and chips fish) fish and chips. Also a wonderful Clam Chowder).

just immense, proper cod fish fingers, homemade tartar sauce, big slices of gherkin, all with a “small” chips, so fucking good

Cod and chips is three times the price now here.
September 27, 2026 at 2:54 PM
Ahh if they are small pieces of white fish, I'd get that.

I was saying the price for medium cod/haddock etc.

Just checked my locals - I was about right, it depends on the place (or plaice, LOL). Around £10 for cod/haddock and chips £3-4. Central London is more: Cod and large chips £17.50?!

Before Brexit, my concept of British was defined by an openness & inclusiveness to other cultures, that I experienced as much less defining of English in particular.

British was the embrace of multiculturism, English was embrace of their culture - "public" schools, maypoles, cod in fish & chips.

Nothing better than eating takeaway fish (cod) and chips from a good chippy when you are out and about and hungry …

We used to try to identify which newspaper we got ours in and how posh they made us… giving my age away there.
Good luck with your canvassing…👍

Now, I'll be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of the fries (the chips, as you Brits call them). I like my fries to be HARD and CRUNCHY. These soft bois don't do it for me. But, my partner was with me and he liked them, so they did not go to waste!

Also, the cod was SO big that both me and my partner

So, I thought I'd be getting something akin to what I've gotten at other American restaurants when I order "fish and chips." I didn't know what made it "authentically British". Of course, I also ordered curry to go with it.

Bruh, I did NOT realize they gave you a WHOLE ASS COD

My child has been begging to try fish and chips and I finally bought some cod to make some: British husband cleared his plate and then Maeve took a bite and went “oh no, I don’t like this” 😂

I have to agree with all the people suggesting Fish (haddock not cod, mind you!) & Chips, as it’s unbeatable (and best enjoyed by the coast, if possible.)

Sweet-wise, you can’t go wrong with a Tunnock’s Tea Cake. Or 5.

That sounds awesome, although I'll caution that trout is a richer, oilier fish than I've seen used for gefilte fish, which tends towards firm, white fleshed fish. Cod, hake, halibut, pike: i think anything you'd use for fish and chips would make a good gefilte fish

Cape Cod chips are the worst. Not sure what other ones you're referring to though.
September 19, 2026 at 10:34 PM
Yeah, large cod is like £9.90 and £3.50 for the chips. South East prices are mental, but that's really cheap compared to others around here. It stings when you recall 35p portions of chips in the early 90s 🤣👍

To put this in perspective, meat, including bacon, rationing started around 1941, and continued through to 1954.

During this same 13 year period, you could have as much fish & chips (or fish by itself) as you could afford, every day. The chip shops' fish was cod or haddock.

At my local before covid a small chips was £1.50 and a small cod £4.50.

Since then, trying to recoup covid losses, Ukraine war doubling the price of cooking oil, as for the fish…

The small Chips is now £5.00 and the small cod not available; a medium is £14.00

Can fish and chip shops survive? ‘We made more money by closing than staying open’
Soaring fish prices, labour costs and changing tastes all spell bad news for Britain’s chippies. Is this the end for the seaside staple – or will a few innovators succeed in keeping them alive?
