I was bitten by a dog August 2 and had to go to the emergency room for treatment; it cost me $4,000 out of pocket. Today, October 2, I got the $4,000 reimbursed from the dog owners' home owners' insurance company (also got this gnarly scar).

Lots of people can't float $4,000 for 2 months.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is one of the delayed complications of measles and affects up to 1 in 600 unvaccinated children who’ve had measles. It occurs without warning an average of 7 years after infection and can occur decades later. There is no cure and it is almost always fatal.

What is vitamin K? Vitamin K is a nutrient we need to help our body make healthy blood clots. When you get a cut, for example, and start to bleed, vitamin K is what helps your body stop bleeding on its own. This is what keeps us from losing dangerous amounts of blood. Vitamin K also serves other purposes, like supporting healthy bones Why do babies need to be given vitamin K? Adults and older children get vitamin K from certain foods, and their bodies produce some vitamin K on their own through the healthy bacteria in their intestines. Babies' intestines don't have many bacteria yet, so their bodies can't make enough vitamin K, and they don’t get enough from the mother during pregnancy because vitamin K does not cross through the placenta well. They also do not receive enough through breastfeeding. Without being given a vitamin K shot, they are at risk of vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB). What is vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB)? VKDB is a severe, often fatal condition in which a baby can’t stop bleeding because they do not have enough vitamin K in their body. It can happen outside of the body (like through the nose or umbilical cord) or inside the body where parents can't see it. A baby could be bleeding in their intestines or brain before their parents know anything is wrong. Brain bleeding happens in about half of all babies who develop VKDB, and it can lead to brain damage or death. How can I protect my baby from VKDB? In most cases, there are no warning signs when VKDB has begun, so it often cannot be treated until it has become severe or too late. It’s important to protect your baby by preventing VKDB. The vitamin K shot at birth prevents VKDB. Babies who do not receive a vitamin K shot are up to 81 times more likely to experience VKDB than babies who receive the shot. The shot has been recommended for all babies since 1961 and is safe and effective at preventing VKDB.
