First off, I'd forgotten how catty Debussy could be as a music critic. On Delius's songs: 'They are very sweet, very pale - music to soothe convalescents in well-to-do neighbourhoods.'

#NowSpinning Delius’s Appalachia in a recording I have not yet heard. The opening is beautifully delicate. Such a lovely work, full of space and magic.

Sir Mark Elder, the four soloists, two choirs and BBC Symphony Orchestra after performing Delius's A Mass of Life at the Proms this evening. A beautifully prepared performance, rich in poetry, atmosphere and rapture.

#NowSpinning Delius Brigg Fair with Hickox in Bournemouth. This magical work really doesn’t seem to come up much in discussion. For lovers of folk song, it’s a real beauty, though I know some struggle with Delius’s wandering tonalities.

Now listening to Delius's Paris: The Song of a Great City. An outstanding mono version by Anthony Collins and a first class modern version by Andrew Davis on the player this evening.

In Delius’s “Fennimore and Gerda”, the two title characters, both female, never even meet (if I remember correctly)

Late night listening: Delius's tone poem On the Mountains. Recordings by Thomas Beecham and Andrew Davis. A great piece for a "name the composer" quiz - I certainly would've struggled to have guessed it right on a first listen.

Is this the moment to admit that I've never actually listened to any of Delius's music and wouldn't know what it sounds like (although I'm guessing it's the soundtrack of the film?)...

All respect to Ken Russell, a proper movie about Delius’s time in Florida would be fantastic.

Yeah, delius’s music is definitely a style I’d want to be able to emulate one day

BBC Proms: A Mass of Life, BBCSO, Elder review - a subtle guide to Delius's Nietzschean masterpiece
For Delius – then a young man, visiting Norway in the late 1880s to walk in its mountains – his first encounter with Nietzsche’s Thus Spake Zarathustra was nothing less than an epiphany. Already high ...

☀️ Good morning - and Happy Solstice! Time to turn up BBC Radio 3. 🎧

Sunrise today comes with the golden glow of Delius’s Daybreak, the hush of James MacMillan’s O Radiant Dawn, and the deep devotion of Oswald’s Myrtle.

#UnconfinedWalks back to the Albert Hall again for Delius’s Mass of Life. Think I was a bit too tired to really get it. Might have helped too if there had been a full (German) text with the program rather than just English surtitles

A Mass of Life review – magical and ecstatic Proms performance of Delius’s magnum opus
Mark Elder and the BBC Symphony Orchestra make such an outstanding case for Delius’s setting of Nietzsche that its 37-year absence from the Proms is baffling

EIF 2026: I fear there is a reason why Coleridge-Taylor’s The Song of Hiawatha is not performed. Very well done but like Delius’s Mass of Life I don’t think it needs to be done again in a hurry.

Song of Summer is a fascinating look into the process of music composition and also how disability affects the creative process.

My classical music post for today is Frederick Delius’s A Song of Summer.

Plenty of vocal riches at Wexford Festival Opera this year, crowned by the revelation of young American soprano Lydia Grindatto in Verdi and a strong recital. Fine stagings of Handel's 'Deidamia' and Zemlinsky's 'The Dwarf'. I loved Delius's 'The Magic Fountain', having caught up with it on YouTube.

A drawback of choosing relatively or very obscure operas, as they've been mostly doing in Wexford Festival since 1951, is that the audiences probably won’t come out humming the tunes. That changed thi...
