As someone who took Latin in high school, I find the never-ending obsession with the Iliad and the Odyssey with zero spillover interest in the Aeneid interesting and disappointing.

Dido with attendants and a goddess personifying Africa (suggested by the elephant headdress). In the distance there is a ship which suggests this scene depicts the moment Dido realises that Aeneas had unceremoniously dumped her to continue his quest to found Rome.

This is not an accident!
It is picking up threads throughout the poem!
Aeneas is a prig! His treatment of Dido is very obviously unjust, even by Roman standards. He doesn't appear particularly heroic. He's called pius a lot, but we only see that in the stories he tells *about himself.*
