This format was common in English music printing around 1600, for part-songs like this and for instrumental ensembles (famously Dowland’s *Lachrimae*). It’s generally accepted that the music would have been laid flat on a table.

I sometimes listen to instrumental music while I write. Usually a youtube stream or long video. I used to like lofi channels but now I have to specifically look for stuff that was released and/or uploaded a bunch of years ago to avoid AI. In today's case, a 5 hour video of John Dowland's lute music.
