#ECMWF's
Google DeepMind shows a 33% chance of a tropical storm. ECMWF's tropical cyclone probabilities from EPS & AIFS exceed 80%. Surely that means this nor'easter will be a tropical storm, right?

Short answer... it's not that simple.

Breaking down why in this technical thread 🧵

Milton's track is so odd it's outsmarted ECMWF's GIS assumptions
There is a long technical explanation for why ECMWF’s tracker is having issues, but the short version is it partitions tropical cyclones into basins, and their Atlantic & Pacific basin border is delineated around 90W.

The problem? Milton is west of 90W and crossing that boundary from west to east.

Is the Gulf sea breeze the ECMWF’s Katrina?
Question: Did the European operational model change how it handles sea breeze convection? Because this "exploding" diurnal activity it has been showing for a few days is bizarre.

2024 is now virtually certain to be the warmest year on record, and will be above 1.5C in most surface temperature datasets, including Copernicus/ECMWF's ERA5 shown here:
October 28, 2024 at 3:18 PM
To illustrate this, let's look at the 12z AIFS - which ECMWF's tracker identified as a tropical cyclone at hour 48.

Looking at its model fields, this is clearly a baroclinic cyclone associated with synoptic forcing undergoing warm seclusion:

All of the plots in the post above this are from objective algorithms that use global model & ensemble member data to estimate whether a cyclone is tropical or non-tropical.

This is no easy task, and can mis-identify systems often. Per ECMWF's own explanation:
September 25, 2026 at 1:24 AM
This is the time step when ECMWF's objective algorithm has AIFS peaking in intensity while cateogorized as a tropical cyclone.

A simple look at this map is a clear tell to any meteorologist or experienced forecaster that this is not a tropical cyclone:

This enormous Absorbed Solar Radiation and net-flux increase means that there's a lot more warming in the pipeline!

I estimate about 0.5°C additional regional warming over the next decade.

Global temperatures are now available from
Copernicus/ECMWF's ERA5 reanalysis product for 2023.

They find it was the warmest year on record by a large margin, at 1.48C above preindustrial levels, higher than the 1.43C that JRA-55 reported earlier this week:

Around 1.5 exabytes (1,500,000,000,000,000,000 bytes) of data are currently stored, equivalent to roughly 175 billion music tracks.
