Premier Danielle Smith says Edmonton Public is doing a "bit of vicious compliance" in complying with the province's age-appropriate book policy in schools, and says she will hold EPSB's hand to help develop their list.

Smart move on EPSB's part, this should force Smith to back down!

Some trustees work more — during my time on the board, I put in far more than the minimum. But that's at the discretion of the trustee, and summers can be pretty quiet.

EPSB's own stated range in the information provided for candidates is 10-30 hours per week.

I was researching something else tonight and came across this devastating reminder of how cruel the 2019 UCP cuts to PUF were. EPSB'S Budget cut 76% overnight allowing them to serve 42% less kids with crucial early intervention. /1

3688 students (approx. 3% of EPSB's enrollment) are facing discrimination in the form of limited or refused access to in person learning.
*2579 have been put on "rotational" (limited) schedules.
*1109 have been restricted to at home learning only.

I think EPSB's announcement of this is shrewd, because it makes the provincial government look like mouth-breathers...

"In 2024, Trustee Sumar introduced an amendment to EPSB's annual budget to revoke funding for seclusion room construction, an estimated cost savings of approx $900k. Despite this & EPSB's commitment to phase out seclusion rooms, all but 2 of the Board of Trustees voted against this amendment."

That’s true too.
She made a comment that “maybe she needed to hold EPSB’s hand” when the backlash occurred.
All they were doing was following the ministerial order.

Marcia Hole (Ward C) just announced her resignation from EPSB. I know this took serious courage, and I applaud her for choosing the difficult but ethical path.

This leaves just 6 out of 9 seats filled on the board, meaning that yet another trustee will have to take on serving two wards.

EPSB’s action telling parents of children with disabilities to stay home is discrimination. The superintendent needs to be held accountable for his callous regard for these children. He has a legal and moral responsibility to serve all children not just the ones he deems easy to serve.

I think school boards should share real numbers: what would it actually cost to meet classroom needs? EPSB’s Superintendent said tripling SLS wouldn’t be enough. Trustees must be loud about complexity—and back it up with data. We’re all being failed by underfunding. (1/2)
