Despite our ongoing (at this point seemingly eternal) drought, the frost flowers continue to appear. These two were striking in their graceful curves.

A frost flower extrudes from the stalk of dittany plant curving around and from the stalk in several separate curves. It then tops itself with a little 'fascinator hat'. It is surrounded by brown leaves. This frost flower has two sweeping curves on opposite sides of the stalk with the one on the right looking a bit like a torn flag blowing in the wind. It is surrounded by brown leaves but a little green plant is hiding right by it under the leaves.

Found my very first frost flower at Lane Spring in MO today! Being on the north side of a hill out of the sun protected them. I found several on #ironweed and #goldenrod stems! #frostflowers #iceflowers #nature #hiking #Missouri #Ozarks #fall #autumn #naturalist #forest #nativeplants #plants

It hasn't been the best winter (by far) for frost flowers but happily they haven't been completely absent either.

In my area, the dittany plant can form frost flowers when the temperatures are below freezing overnight but the ground is not already frozen. The cold temperatures cause liquid in the stem of the dittany to expand, causing cracks to form along the length of the stem. Water is then forced out throw the cracks and freezes upon contact with the air. As more water is drawn through the cracks it pushes the thin ice layers further from the stem creating the 'flower'. This frost flower is long, smooth at the top and curly at the bottom. The top has started to melt so that some of the ice is transparent. This frost flower is nestled on a bed of moss and moss sprouts. There is snow on the moss. There are three frost flowers in the photograph with once being entirely in focus and only the bottom of another one in focus. The focused frost flowers have curled and wavy edges. This frost flower is surrounded by dead leaves and blades of sedge, some of which are still green and some are brown. The frost has two curved wings coming out of each side of the stem and a third smaller curved wing that seems to be coming from behind.

This is frost flower has spread out along the ground like a long ribbon that has been dropped. This frost flower is actually two different frost flowers. One is in two separate pieces, the bottom one is an open oval, the top piece is a half curve. The other frost flower is in an almost closed wing formation. They are both lying on a bed of dead leaves. This is also two separate frost flowers, a low round one in front and a thin one going up the dittany stem in back with another piece at the bottom in a perpendicular shape with a large opening where it left and came back to the stem.

A nice surprise on the #hike were " #frostflowers ". Fallen tree limbs that are wet, and exposed to freezing temperatures will sometimes steadily extrude ice from the wood grain that resembles hair, fur, or even sort of flower petals. All made of very delicate ice that quickly vanishes in warmth.
"Frost Flowers" This form of ice can resemble curled fur such as seen here in white curving curls, twisting out from wood grain that the freezing temperatures overnight made the water inside fallen tree limbs extrude form the wood grain. Here, most of the white curving form of the ice curls takes up the majority of the image from bottom to center-top. to the left can be seen part of the broken end of a dark colored wooden branch the ice came out of. To the right is some fallen tree debris of small dark colored twigs, and a yellow leaf on the forest floor, with some green in the background. To the top of the image is the extended length of the fallen tree branch, becoming blurry in the out of focus distance in this close-up. "Frost Flowers" This form of ice can resemble curled fur such as seen here in white curving curls, twisting out from wood grain that the freezing temperatures overnight made the water inside fallen tree limbs extrude form the wood grain. Here, most of the white curving form of the ice curls takes up the majority of the image from bottom right to top left. The left potion of the ice curled from the fallen tree limb are in the shade. The right side is in direct sunlight, showing detail of the threads of ice that resemble hair or fur curving to the right. Some of the underlying light tan color of the tree limb can be seen through the ice threads. The remainder of the close-up image is darker with only long out of focus shapes of some cedar tree leaves, and twigs visible.
