"Les Pêcheurs de Perles" premiered #OnThisDay in 1863 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris. "The Pearl Fishers" doesn't compare to #GeorgesBizet's masterpiece "Carmen" but the duet "Au fond du temple saint" is one of the greatest in #opera:

I'm listening to #Carmen being broadcast live from the Met on WQXR & it's a very good production of the #opera musically even if the staging is ludicrous; the quintet is a touchstone of the genius of #GeorgesBizet's masterpiece & only hit:

#ProsperMérimée was born in Paris #OnThisDay in 1803, best known for writing the novella #Carmen upon which #GeorgesBizet's #opera is based; here's Waltraud Meier singing the famous seguidilla from the #opera:

I'm watching "Carmen" on PBS & Aigul Akhmetshina, Piotr Beczała (Don José), Angel Blue (Micaëla) & Kyle Ketelsen (Escamillo) all sing well but Carrie Cracknell's staging of this Met production of #GeorgesBizet's #opera is less 'relevant' than it is absurd...
