In San Jose, CA, #Hartley&Monty spent time in the nest area this morning. Monty has a certain technique for luring Hartley into the nest box for bonding. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. And sometimes, he surprises us.

San Jose City Hall Falcons (7/18). They were heard before being seen. A parent fled. Then Walton landed on the nest ledge, followed by Scout. They registered complaints about the food service. Visited the drain. Scout did a bit of sunbathing. Perhaps they realized that you can't go home again....
Walton made a brief appearance on the nest ledge today. Despite a previous visit ending when Monty chased him off for buzzing Hartley, he returned today, making a racket. A parent heard him coming and had already fled by the time Walton landed. (Screen capture courtesy of the San Jose City Hall Falcons.) Scout (left) arrived right behind Walton, also making a racket. ❓👀 Guess the Animal: What's in the Box!?

This mystery patient arrived from Sacramento in a dark, quiet box for a low-stress trip. Clues: found on every continent but Antarctica, known for "scrape" & "stoop," and it's the same species as San Jose's beloved Hartley & Monty. Guess below! 🪺

Returning from adventures in San Francisco and Oakland, Walton made a dramatic entry this morning by buzzing Hartley; Monty showed his displeasure; no one was hurt (video by @skh4birdies.bsky.social): www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ71.... Stewart's tracker stopped working last month. #birds

The falcon on the louver was an adult (looks like Hartley, while Monty was in the nest box at the time).

The yellow area at the base of the beak is a telltale sign of an adult; in fledglings, this area is gray/silver.

The bird stayed briefly, and there wasn't a clear image of his legs. But—to my surprise—it might have been Jet (possible red color band on left leg). Jet was assumed to have dispersed a while ago.

Juvenile heard his parents bonding and paid a visit to the nest area. By the time he arrived, Hartley and Monty had fled. This may be Jet, given that he's the only one with a color band (red) on his left leg and the alphanumeric band on the right leg. It was hard to tell given the distance and that there was no clear image of his leg bands. (Screen capture courtesy of the San Jose City Hall Falcons.)

San Jose City Hall Falcons. Juveniles keep turning up on the cams, so perhaps some have not yet dispersed (left the parents' territory). This afternoon, one of the juveniles heard the parents bonding, and flew in, loudly announcing his arrival. Parents Hartley and Monty fled.

and catching live prey. After mastering the stoop, they stay in the parent's territory for up to 2 months before dispersing.

For now, they're relying on the parents for food, as evidenced today by the Scout and Jet harassing the parents as they were bonding (see alt text). #birds
Scout (right, blue band) heard the parents bonding and landed on the nest box to let them know he's hungry. He was soon joined by Jet (red band). A racket ensued. (Screen capture courtesy of the San Jose City Hall Falcons.) When their loud I'm-hungry vocalizations had no effect, Jet decided to take more direct action and fly into the nest box with Hartley and Monty. It wasn't caught on camera, but you can see that feathers flew and wings flapped. Hartley and Monty escaped. Scout and Jet likely decided to try another approach. Stay tuned. When they were banded, they were equipped with tracking devices: Jet has traveled ~25 miles to Livermore, CA, and Stewart is hanging out ~10 miles from the nest. Soon they'll disperse (leave the territory). Enjoy now (video by @skh4birdies.bsky.social): www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQwf.... #birds

Jet & Walton did some flashy a.m. aerobatics before settling on the roof, plotting to oust #Hartley&Monty from the nest area. Jet carried out the plot, but the adults made up for it with p.m. rendezvous.

#Hartley&Monty celebrated a successful season with a long bonding session. That is until Jet disturbed their peace with an extended screaming session. The cacophony drew Scout & Walton to the balcony.
