Here’s what unfolded when Brian Maloney Jr., one of the owners, went to Chase👇
Article excerpt: "'I went to the bank and said, ‘What the hell is going on?'' Maloney told ProPublica. After spending nearly two hours with the local Chase branch manager, Maloney realized that he, too, was a victim of the bank’s lax procedures: He said the branch manager told him that Chase had allowed someone to obtain an account online in his company’s name in March 2023 with nothing more than a digital signature and an employer identification number, but no personal identification. That account had then accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars of wire transfers. And now Maloney’s family business — not Chase — was the defendant in a lawsuit. 'How is this legal?' he wondered. (Colin Schmitt, a retired FBI agent, said Chase could have mitigated the fraud by at least pausing incoming wire transfers to the fake Middlesex account and asking its owner to justify the transactions. 'If you’re just using an account just for wires, that’s a big red flag,' Schmitt said.)"

Archival Name of the Day is Salem Middlesex, who was prosecuted for theft in 1797. Many African Americans in New England were given or assumed geographical names, incl. Boston, Bristol, Gloucester, Newport, Charlestown, Dublin, London & Salem. Salem, though, is in Essex, not Middlesex, County 🗃️
A printed recognizance completed by hand requiring Salem Middlesex, laborer, to appear at Boston's Court of General Sessions of the Peace in January 1798 to stand trial for stealing lumber and four lime casks. Middlesex's surety is Prince Watts, Soap Boiler. Both Middlesex and Watts were African Americans. Source: Adlow Collection of Boston Legal History, Box 71, Special Collections, Boston Public Library.
