The Lower Mills Merchants Association and partners will stage its annual Holiday Stroll in Lower Mills and Milton Village on Sat., Nov. 30 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The popular event includes free trolley rides, open houses at several participating businesses, and a holiday tree lighting at 6:15 p.m.

3/3 A few miles outside Bradford is Halifax with its Piece Hall, opened in the 1770s for local cottage weavers to lay out and sell their 'pieces' to woollen merchants. It was soon superceded by the mills, and has had a number of uses since. The merchants offices are now shops.

Biddle's Warehouse, Gloucester Docks, UK, Sat. 23rd. September 2023
Former bonded warehouse. 1830. By W Franklin, architect, of Stroud, for John Biddle, miller, of Stroud, in style similar to cloth mills in the Stroud Valley. Following subsidence of foundations supporting internal columns, warehouse leased in 1864 to John Weston and Co., corn merchants, on condition that repairs were carried out. Brick with stone sills to window openings, internally timber floors supported by hollow cast-iron columns; slate roof, originally hipped, but replaced after 1864 with end-gabled roof with timber barge and eaves boards. A large rectangular block parallel with the Dock's Main Basin. EXTERIOR: five storeys and loft, the original design of four storeys and loft had a double-height ground floor divided later by the insertion of a floor; brick eaves cornices, in the centre of west side a full-height loading door opening with timber doors to each floor, and above at eaves level a timber, gabled, cat-head hoist canopy, flanking the openings on each side four windows to each floor; east side has 9 windows each floor with timber connecting link to Shipton's Warehouse; in the centre of each gable-end wall a loading door opening with timber doors to each floor, and above a cat-head hoist canopy at apex of gable, flanking the openings to either side two windows on each floor, and a single window in the gable; all the window openings have brick, segmental-arched heads and stone sills; the windows on all floors, other than the top floor, are larger than in later warehouses within the Docks.

after the local road system became too expensive to maintain, and camel transport became more economic. instead of chariots or wagons, travelers and merchants used caravans. it wasn't a lost technology per se; they used mechanical circular motion in their heavy equipment, like water mills.

Obverse, Charles III of Spain in profile, countermarked BALLINDALLOCH COTTON WORKSin two circles around 5/, 27.06g/12h (Manville 6 and p.18; Hodge 006S.005a, this coin; KM. CC7). Light scratches on reverse depicting the Spanish royal arms, coin nearly very fine, countermark better. Catalogue: 'Ballindalloch was acquired in 1800 by James Finlay & Co,, Glasgow merchants, who also operated mills at Catrine and Deanston. Judging from the dates of the dollar host coins and the valuation stamped, all of the Ballindalloch silver tokens were probably issued between about 1800 and 1810.' The tokens were issued in order to pay factory workers and circulated as an unofficial local currency. Between 1751 and 1816, the Royal Mint issued very few silver coins because it could not afford to buy silver for coinage. Merchants addressed the shortage by acquiring Spanish or French coins, and countermarking them with a value that slightly exceeded their bullion value. Fluctuations in market value and counterfeiting were a problem.

Around 2010 General Mills and Mars jacked their prices for no reason other than record profits. Their competitors quickly followed.

In the 1830s, my city had over 1,000 women working in mills and sleeping in boardinghouses staffed by matrons paid to teach Puritan morals, all owned by conservative merchants.

You may read in Gramsci how capitalists created a cultural hegemony, but isn't it amazing when it's this straightforward?

In the late 20s under Chiang Kai-Shek, it was state policy to kidnap rich people until they agreed to fund the government
The three year old son of David W. K. Au, the director of the Sincere Company, was kidnapped, and a donation of Y500,000 to the Kuomintang cause was requested. A son of Hsü Pao-cheng, a wealthy cotton merchant, was arrested as a communist and held for Y670,000. The net result of the use of arrests and threat of arrests to coerce money from merchants and officials was, according to the American Consul in Shanghai, “a veritable reign of terror among the money classes.” An Australian observer in China, Owen Chapman, reported that “Wealthy Chinese would be arrested in their homes or mysteriously disappear from the streets… Millionaires were arrested as ‘communists’!” Chapman reported that “Chiang is estimated to have raised in all by this means some US$50,000,000. Under no regime in modern times had Shanghai known such a reign of terror. The wave of terror engulfed many merchants. On 14 May 1927, the son of Sih Pao-shin, a wealthy indigo merchant living in the French concession, was arrested as a counter-revolutionary. His release was obtained on 19 May 1927, after Sih agreed to “donate” Y200,000 to the nationalist cause. Jung Tsung-ching, the cotton and flour “king” of Shanghai and Wusih, was arrested on grounds that he had assisted warlords, and Chiang personally ordered the confiscation of his mills in Wusih. The order was rescinded after Jung donated Y250,000 to government coffees. On 16 May 1927, Chao Chi-yung, a prominent wine merchant, was arrested by military authorities. He was released after reportedly contributijg Y200,000.

A city sits out the mouth of the river surrounded by jungle on one side and ocean on the other. Hex 1208 - The Coast of Knives 1208 - The Coast of Knives No one is entirely certain whether the coast earned its name from its famous port city or if it gave that port the moniker by which it is now known. For as long as anyone can remember, the Coast of Knives has been known for both piratical and mercantile exploits. The coastline is navigable but dangerous the port at the rivermouth funnelling in vessels through the safest route but for the braver captains there are many hidden coves and smuggling caves that allow those who the secret ways between hidden rocks and sand bars to bring their goods ashore without paying the docking fees and taxes the Port of Knives thrives on. Terrain: Coast, 1:6 chance to become lost unless following the road or the coastline. Encounters: Medium frequency, Coastal. Foraging: Food standard/Water low The Port of Knives Known as the commercial hub of the jungle its merchant houses form the noble class whilst the majority work in the docks or lumber mills. The intense politicking between the merchant houses over trading rights and shipping routes is happily fed off by the pirate princes who profit off the merchants bickering and the many goods they take as spoils. The Smuggling Caves Much of the coastline is dangerous to navigate by sea but for those who have learned the passages through the jagged rocks there are many caves and hidden coves that provide a makeshift dock for vessels wanting to avoid attention or taxation for their goods, these caves thrive with smugglers and pirates all too happy to add an incautious adventurers treasure haul to their stash. A map which shows the layout of the port of knives districts. The only land path enters the city from the east heading into the noble district while the poorer timber district lies on the west side of the city. The pleasure district divides these opposite districts while the harbour district stretches along the southern side of the city, connecting to every district.

Miller's family on his mother's side fled the anti-Jewish pogroms, early 20th c., and settled in western PA. While other immigrants found jobs in the steel mills, that opportunity was denied the Jewish community. As a result, his family became merchants and were very successful.
