Mo'o of Hawaiian legend are aquatic dragons that often appear as beautiful women, geckos, and giant lizards.

In one tale, volcano goddess Pele sends her younger sister, Hi'iaka, on an errand to slay three mo'o and rescue her mortal sweetheart. #BookologyThursday

So for this #RockinTuesday, here's a shot from Waialua on Oahu. Somewhere around here is a mo'o, a dragon spirit...

The Hawaiian word mo'o can be applied to any reptile, but the mo'o described in Hawaiian mythology are large dragon-like creatures that serve as the guardians of certain bodies of water. They also have the power to shapeshift between reptilian and human form. #MythologyMonday

Here's my first video exploring the Hawaiian inspirations for Pokémon, locations, & themes from the Alola region.

Salazzle draws inspiration from fire-bellied newts and mo'o, the female dragons of Hawaiian mythology.

Also in Hawai'i, the Honu like the Mo'o (lizard), Pueo (owl) and the Mano (shark) are sacred in Native Hawaiian culture.
Seeing a turtle is very lucky! We have the Honu, the Hawaiian sea turtle. Turtles are so beautiful.

Banana flowers, which mo’o (geckos) love to lick.
Each one of those long flowers will eventually produce a banana.

The mo’o of Hawaiian myth, a shapeshifter and attributed to being almost always female and reptilian. Coincidentally also related to the taniwha.

Mo'o are versatile and quick on their feet. But so are tanuki.

#Orchids are #flowers, too.
I took this picture at one of our orchid society meetings, at least ten years ago. I noticed that this Cymbidium orchid was jiggling a bit, so I got my camera ready. Up popped a green gecko (mo’o), and I was able to get the shot.

I think this is a night-blooming cereus bud, but I’m not positive.
See the small mo’o there? (gecko)
