High school football is at it again. According to a report out Thursday from Shore Sports Insider (formerly Shore Sports Network), the NJSIAA's Leagues and Conferences committee has recommended that the NJSIAA move back to snaking playoff brackets in each section, rather than splitting them up geographically. Snaked brackets are intended to "balance" them. In that process, when the top 16 in North and South in each group are determined, teams are placed into sections with, for example, the top overall seed in Central, then seeds 2 and 3 in South, then 4 and 5 in Central, 6 and 7 in South, and so on.

With the NJSIAA's full membership set to vote in May whether to introduce a shot clock in high school basketball, the debate has intensified among players, coaches, fans, even administrators. While many coaches believe it would be better for the game - eliminating long periods where teams with a lead, or looking for the last shot of the game or quarter, simply hold the ball - those opposed often cite the cost of both the equipment and personnel, as well as the logistics.

Big news to come out of Robbinsville Wednesday, as a proposal to join the 32 other states - including the District of Columbia - that currently utilize a shot clock in basketball advanced through the NJSIAA's executive committee - after a Janaury presentation by its advisory committee - with a vote by the full membership coming in May. The news was first reported Wednesday afternoon…

A win in the Group 4 title game over Ramapo makes Winslow Twp. the top-rated New Jersey high school football, according to the Strength Index, a major part of the NJSIAA's playoff formula. In Central Jersey Sports Radio's final unofficial calculations, the Eagles finished the year No. 1, with an SI value of 109.49 points. That's 4.63 points higher than Don Bosco Prep, which was upset by St.

In 2024, Phillipsburg became the first Big Central Conference team to make the NJSIAA's state football finals, in the third year sine the playoffs expanded. In 2025, they're looking to make the return trip. To do so, they'll need to beat the same team they did last year, North 1 Group 4 champion Ramapo. That'll be the last game at Maloney Stadium this season for Phillipsburg, as the North 2, Group 4 champion Stateliners take on the Raiders at 7 pm this Friday night in the Group 4 semifinals.

Less than 24 hours after the Spotswood football team finished off an 8-2 season - snubbed by the NJSIAA's UPR playoff formula in favor of 3-5 Camden Eastside on a strength of schedule tiebreaker - head coach Chris Meagher has stepped down. Meagher coached the Chargers for four seasons, and after a 1-8 campaign in his first, a rebuilding year, Spotswood never won fewer than seven games his next four seasons, going 7-3 in 2022, then 8-2 in 2023, last season, and this year.

Gridiron New Jersey - the official calculator of the NJSIAA's NJ UPR playoff formula - has updated the out-of-state Strength Index values for dozens of teams, with only 13 public schools affected as we head into Cutoff Weekend. But the changes helped give a boost to two Big Central Conference teams. The changes affected North and South Group 5 and Group 2, as well as South 4 and North 3 supersections.

It was a busy night in the Big Central Conference Friday, and there were some thrilling games along with some important wins by teams fighting to improve their playoff standing just three weeks before the NJSIAA's cutoff weekend. The highest-ranked team in action, No. 2 Woodbridge, fell behind in the first half and trailed by eleven at the break. But…

For as much as the NJSIAA's playoff formula does its best to balance competing ideas - getting the best teams in, but cutting down on travel - the Big Central Conference has two unbeaten teams in Group 1, but they are in very different circumstances. New Providence (5-0) is one of the two top seeds in the North supersection, but Manville (6-0) is eighth overall in the South.

Top-ranked Phillipsburg was among eight Big Central Conference teams in action Friday night, and all eight of them won, with two more - Summit and Manville - in action Saturday afternoon. The Stateliners, along with Bernards, St. Joseph-Metuchen, Sayreville, Woodbridge, Spotswood and New Providence, all remain perfect heading into Week Six play next week, with just three games left before the NJSIAA's Cutoff Weekend.

With the NJSIAA instituting a statewide running clock mercy rule in high school basketball - standardizing the previously-optional rule across New Jersey - it will certainly have effects on many games and programs this winter. The intent, of course, is to prevent mammoth blowouts, or at least keep them from getting further out of hand.. Now, when a score differential reaches 35 points in the second half, the clock will run continuously, only to be stopped for time outs, injuries, technical fouls, or officials' stoppages.
