#NYCEDC's
This afternoon I spoke at a community rally in Red Hook to support the Brooklyn container port and against NYCEDC’s plan for luxury housing on the waterfront.

The EDC has undemocratically postponed this vote for the fifth time because they know their plan will be rejected once they allow a vote.

The RFP makes it look like the city is committing to provide ongoing subsidies to stores in order to have an offering in this category of goods that's 30% below *retail prices* elsewhere.

Despite NYCEDC’s assurances that ships that are unable to connect to shore power (e.g. MSC Meraviglia) were using scrubbers, those ships were visibly blowing black smoke. (ships using scrubbers blow white smoke). (48/50)

They were one of the early ones to that trend. NYCEDC's Industrial Business Zone (IBZ) program helped. Transmitter, Brooklyn Brewery, 18th Ward, Grimm, KCBC, Eckhart, Keg & Lantern, Strong Rope, Five Boroughs, and Gun Hill Publick House are all in IBZs in Brooklyn. edc.nyc/industry/ind...

If @NYCMayor was as passionate about reducing ship pollution as this, maybe he'd have made good on his and @NYCEDC's promise to upgrade Brooklyn's shore power system:

“Shore power has been my personal dream & initiative,” says Daniella Levine Cava, mayor of Miami-Dade County.

As always, @kevinduggan.bsky.social has the Streetsblog angle on today's approval of @nycmayor and @NYCEDC's Brooklyn Marine Terminal plan — which one opponent calls "government malpractice": nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/09/22/g...

Delayed but delivered! UPROSE finally flew their protest banner over the NYCEDC's BATWorks Climate Innovation Hub in Sunset Park on Sept 27, after federal flight restrictions initially grounded their action. The grassroots fight against development is literally in the air.
Sunset Park activists respond to BATWorks hub with banner protest
A grassroots organization is at odds with a new development in Sunset Park, and the issue has even come to what’s in the air above it.

TBH it seems like downsides are capped at the NYCEDC's budget (not large relative to the population of NYC) and upsides are maybe it keeps key coalition partners onside for more important fights. Won't judge it a success until Mamdani actually delivers on the other stuff but it's why I don't hate it

NYCEDC’s plan to replace the aging Hunters Point South ferry landing is now in a public comment period with the Army Corps of Engineers, running through July 13. The design under review looks little like the one that drew community backlash in 2022.

Because of @NYCEDC’s inept planning, this crane can only reach two of the cruise ships visiting Brooklyn. So the health & climate benefits of ships using shore power at berth - instead of burning dirty diesel 24/7 - haven’t been realized. 80% of cruise visits cannot connect.
