Highly recommend this! I took several paleography and codicology courses through IES early in my PhD and they were excellent!
I know no-one wants to think about next term right now, but please remind students to book their places on the Latin palaeography online short courses at beginner or intermediate level taking place in February 👇 #MedievalSky 📖🧑‍💻👩‍💻👨🏽‍💻👩🏻‍💻🧑🏿‍💻🧑‍💻 📚

I'll reframe my earlier Kermit-flail over this ruling and ask instead: can people think of other examples of script being written right down the middle of the ruled line, as in the detail pic here, instead of sitting on it, floating above it, or hanging from it? #paleography #codicology #medievalsky
NBD, just hanging out with the Cathach, @rialibrary.bsky.social MS 12 R 33 dating to 560-600 AD and the oldest extant Irish manuscript of the Latin Psalter 🤩📜

The textbook will focus on comparative codicology, paleography, art history, literate culture, and the post-medieval lives of manuscripts from Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, with case studies from each appearing through the volume.

...the Gospels carried out from separate vols, too? Or were there separate formats for different liturgical purposes?

No one can unconvince me that the study of paleography and codicology greatly enhances ones understanding of history and the transmission of ideas. Any history student should try to read 12th century handwriting at least once. And hold in their hands an 800 year old manuscript.

I have been working with a student on English paleography (mostly secretary hands), alchemy, and codicology all semester, and it was only yesterday, as I was working through some weird Greek and Hebrew in an alchemy text, that they became aware that I am a cryptid Europeanist.

You're very welcome. The Warburg Institute organizes paleography courses. Check the Renaissance Society of America website for similar postings--they typically advertise courses of paleography and codicology

Interestingly the Bobbio Missal *is* ruled, the scribe just doesn't care. Each line of writing does more or less end between two prickings, but it doesn't seem to occur to the scribe to use the ruled lines to establish a baseline.

Today's teachable codicological tidbit + calendar of saints entry: Today is the feast of Paulinus of Aquileia. Here is the opening of his Liber exhortationis in St. Gall 138, p. 2, with *very* clear pricking and ruling. The MS was written at St. Gall ca. 900. #manuscripts #codicology #paleography

For all the ladders and sages in this book, the thing that really blew my mind was that minim height clings to the BOTTOM of the ruled lines! Closeups attached. Is this normal for #Greek #manuscripts, either generally or in some times and places? #paleography #codicology #medievalsky

This is a tiny book, which gives me a chance to introduce a new feature: #ComparedtoCappelli! The Bobbio Missal is approximately 3 ¾" wide and 7 ¼" tall. That's an inch narrower than Cappelli and just a little bit taller. #paleography #codicology

Widely considered a hoax by experts in codicology, paleography, and medieval studies.

thanks David! It's very different from my usual traditional codicology/paleography work, but built on those (hopefully sturdy!) foundations.
