Seeing white doves in a sea of pigeons is cute until you remember that white ones are exclusively domestic bred and were probably used for wedding ceremonies for 5 sec of entertainment and now just try to survive with the regular pigeons 😢

I grew up in the Bay Area; pigeons were everywhere! It makes me sad that there are no pigeons anywhere to be found here. There are mourning doves, but that’s as close as it gets!

Pigeons are familiars of Hachiman (八幡神), god of archery and war.
In 859 the god instructed Gyōkyō (行教) to found a shrine (Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū 石清水八幡宮) for him in Kyōto, so he might guard the imperial city. A golden dove led the monk to a suitable spot.

a gray flecked pigeon, a red (brown) pigeon, and a black and white mottled pigeon came to visit me by the pool when they saw me feeding the doves. i posted one blurry photo of the black and white flying, keep trying to get a better photo. it's tail feathers alternate black and white, and it is quite distinctive when flying. A friend recently asked me about why I started feeding pigeons and I told him about my hypothesis that I'm collecting data for. Then he asked me questions about him that most people do which is, aren't they all just gray, and flying rats etc? So I sent him some photos showing how beautiful and diverse rock doves are. ~WT7

I'm in Brooklyn so I've many bird friends of many types. The local pigeons coexist with the local mourning doves, but they bully them a little.
