“I’ve been writing stories for a younger version of myself who didn’t see any trace of that Persian part of me reflected anywhere.” Ryan Bani Tahmaseb considers Persian stories, identity, and the US-Iran divide.

Rostam prays for victory, so of course he achieves victory — BY SNAPPING SOHRAB’S BACK IN HALF AND STABBING HIM.

As Sohrab lays dying, he says, “my dad will avenge me! My dad is the best!” and shows Rostam his bracelet, which has Rostam’s onyx on it.

Rostam sends for a doctor, but it’s too late.

He’s great at the war thing, Rostam’s great at the war thing, inevitably their armies go to war and they battle.

Sohrab wins but Rostam is like “wait wait wait! Rules of war, you can’t kill me unless you beat me twice!”

For some stupid reason Sohrab goes “sounds great man, rematch tomorrow?”

Bom dia, meu gentil e artístico amigo.

Sohrab had grown up estranged from his father, and when the two finally meet, it’s as enemies. Neither knows the other’s identity until it’s too late.  It’s a tragedy built on misrecognition and […]

Rostam falls to the ground weeping, and Sohrab says, “Don’t worry, Dad, it happened how it needed to happen” and asks that the Shah of Iran spare the men of Turan, because they only fought at Sohrab’s command.

Rostam honors his last wish and the battle ends without any more blood spilled.

While I do think this is an authentic piece, if you want canonical from this region, then I definitely recommend Shahnameh by Ferdowsi, which is where the story of Rostam and Sohrab is from; also, any poetry by Rumi :)

#AcademicSky I think that was a success as I got the feedback that they really enjoyed reading excerpts from Shahname and comparing it to Iliad! I enjoyed teaching them.

#AcademicSky Teaching comparative literature for the first time. A little bit stressed out but also feeling good reading this book!
For epic, comparing excerpts from Homer's Iliad with Ferdowsi's Shahnameh! Apparently, knowing other languages besides English comes in handy!

I have asked a few of those.
All Iranian ethnicities have the same identity: Iranian. We have the same ancient stories and heros. We all love Rostam. We cry for Sohrab, we cheer Kaveh and we despise Zahak.

Go mind the borders of your own country.
