@norapyenson.bsky.social Experiment with phage T4 and S to look at allele replacement. After 9 rounds of evolution, enriched sequences are homing endonucleases (HE) in phage S. Moves into homologous loci lacking the HE gene #SocialViruses26

@annechevallereau.bsky.social What if we look at these dynamics in a spatially structured population? Spatial structure slows phage decline on CRISPR immume bacteria. Spatial structure slows the phage decline www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... #SocialViruses26
The ambivalent effect of spatial structure on the spread of cooperative anti-CRISPR phages
Some phages have evolved the ability to cooperate to evade the immunity triggered by their bacterial host. A first exposure to the phage may weaken the host defences and allow later infections to be s...

@irisirby.bsky.social: 15% of phage pairs are positive relationships. In S. pyogenes three strains co-occur 82-97% of the time (baseline expectation is 26-31%) #SocialViruses26

@norapyenson.bsky.social HE are selfish genetic elements. Selfish genetic elements rapidly move into S. Regions around the HE also come over, giving S lots of T4 alleles. #SocialViruses26

Manley: Experiments: arbitrium response is sensitive to stress. More lysogeny with more signal. When you add stress there's a modulation of the response. Phage are able to integrate both sources of information to make an adaptive decision. journals.plos.org/plosbiology/... #SocialViruses26
Temperate phage evolve to integrate host stress and quorum signals in lysis–lysogeny decisions
Temperate phage face conflicting signals from host stress and quorum sensing when deciding between lysis and lysogeny. This study shows that bacteriophage integrate information on host condition via S...
