"These locks represent legitimate military targets under international humanitarian law... and their destruction would instantly vaporise Iran’s €36 billion infrastructure investment whilst halting Russian drone production for years..."

Gee...that sounds bad...

I know, from history, from Soviet history even, that once you create a system of political oppression that system will be turned against you. As Lenin & then Stalin’s security organs were turned upon the workers and the sailors demanding power be given to workers councils.

I think it's an update of Stalin's, ''The Pope? How many divisions does he have?' 😂

This appears to be the 21st-century equivalent of Stalin's "How many divisions has the pope?" (Note: the pope has definitely outlasted Stalin.)
How many local models do you run?

Fascinating. The description of Stalin's methodology is similar to how I have described T Rump's, which is much more Stalinist one than Hitlerian:

"You couldn’t go to the kitchen, sit down on a chamber pot, have lunch or walk out onto the street without Stalin turning up behind you. All these.."
‘Some memoirs of the Leningrad siege tell stories of heroism on the part of the embattled population, but not Olga Freidenberg’s. It was a Hobbesian world of every man for himself, in which nobody could be trusted.’

Sheila Fitzpatrick on the Russian literary scholar.

Meanwhile in Rusamerica: dispelling any remaining doubts about which side Putin's 🐩 would have supported in last century's war with fascism 👇

(Russia was also Hitler's ally until Stalin's fascist buddy turned on him in 1941.)

Takes something to make Mogg sound like voice of reason but here we are.
Tucker: “I never understood why 🇬🇧 fought World War 2?” 😕

Rees-Mogg: “It was good vs. evil…We did the right thing…”

Tucker: “Has 🇬🇧 benefitted?”

RM: “We defeated Hitler… We’d all be speaking German…”

Tucker: “Who cares?” 🤔

Historical materialism and dialectics work through contradictions: Stalin’s bureaucracy set out to build "socialism in one country," but its headlong drive for forced industrialization actually laid the foundation for state capitalism instead.

Same with the Chinese CP.

PG: I don’t know about the ballots; however, I recall this Stalin quote:

"I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this—who will count the votes, and how.” (1923)

I don’t support those crimes or those Americans. You fuckers, though, have lost the plot by fellating Stalin’s corpse.

I'd put Beria on Stalin's Mount Rushmore of colossal fuckups, yeah, he gets that honor, surely

it was lamentable and one of stalin's great errors along with stupidly and naively taking Israel at face value
October 3, 2026 at 1:45 AM
bingo

and there was alignment with the Stalinist state interest insofar as that extended beyond Stalin's material needs but it turns out that when you're The Guy you get to make the choice every plenipotentiary of a dictator must in that position. You cast a wide net. Really brutal shit

Bringing up Beria in particular is kind of telling. Khrushchev spent basically his entire career trying to explain Beria's actions as a greater extension of Stalin's usurpation of Lenin's nascent personality cult, but the one thing Khrushchev never really questioned was "why", everyone knew "why"

Stalin's purges were for somewhat similar ends.
Hitler would have done it too, but most of them went along with the whole thing in the first place.

I freely admit that before this chapter my knowledge of Kondratiev was “Marxist economist; theory of waves? Sounds a bit pseudoscientific to me” but the grim end of his life is something I’d somehow not known.

This is the sort of thing that would have made Stalin's henchmen collecting confessions during the 1930s Moscow trials go "OK comrade, we appreciate your attitude, but tone it down a little bit".

A German communist who had moved to the USSR in 1930, Szymczak was arrested and tortured during Stalin’s Great Terror. After his expulsion to Nazi Germany, the Gestapo imprisoned him and eventually sent him to Buchenwald.
