A sweeping vista from Frog Lake Butte in the Mt. Hood National Forest, Oregon, unfolds across the frame. These are two of my favorite trees. They're grown up children of nurse stumps.

Seedlings germinated on a stump. The stump rotted away from the center while the younger trees rooted into its decaying wood and eventually sent roots down into the soil.
