Inside the Georgian Doll's House

Het Victoria & Albertmuseum is echt geweldig: kunst en design van over de hele wereld en het allereerste museumcafé ter wereld. Ze hebben gratis rondleidingen, bv elke dag Discover Britain om 15:00. Een (niet gratis) rondleiding door de Royal Albert Hall. Lunchen bij Ottolenghi (wel reserveren!).

Nagaraja Guardstone 800-900 Anuradhapura period Serpent spirits or nagas are believed to protect treasure in the earth or at the bottom of lakes or rivers. This figure is a nagaraja or'serpent spirit king' It would have been one of a pair, placed at the foot of stairs leading up to a stupa. The pair guarded the reliquary mound and its sacred contents.

Laurent Delvaux (1696-1778) Vertumnus and Pomona About 1725 Vertumnus was the shape-shifting Roman god of seasons. He tricked the nymph Pomona into talking to him by disguising himself as an old woman, but then removed his mask. The sculptor, Delvaux, trained in Flanders (now Belgium) before sculpting monuments and garden figures in England, in a successful partnership with Peter Scheemakers. They both left for Rome in 1728.

Lawrence Macdonald (1799-1879) Monument to Emily Georgiana, Countess of Winchilsea (1809-48) Signed and dated 1850 Macdonald was a Scottish sculptor who worked mainly in Rome, specialising in portraits for a British clientele. This memorial shows Lady Winchilsea in an elegant classical pose inspired by Canova's famous portrait of Pauline Bonaparte, also reclining on a daybed. The inscription evokes the sadness of her early death.

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) St John the Baptist 1879-80 Visiting the V&A in 1932, Trinidadian historian C.L.R. James wrote of this famous statue by Auguste Rodin: 'It is no more John the Baptist than I am John the Baptist. It is a statue of a naked man walking, that's all, neither more nor less! What. James recognised here was the pure humanity the figure embodies. Rodin's naturalistic modelling suggests physical action and a highly-charged mental state.

ST PETER About 1510-20 Medieval Christians felt a deep affinity for the saints. They saw them as heavenly helpers, pleading with God to be merciful towards mankind. One of the most popular saints was St Peter, the first Pope. He was often shown holding the keys to Heaven and wearing his papal tiara. This figure was originally brightly painted. It would probably have been set in a church, on a console or ledge on one of the nave columns, with candles burning before it.

Henrietta Skerrett Montalba (1848-1893) Venetian Boy Catching a Crab Signed; about 1892-93 Montalba trained at the National Art Training School (now the Royal College of Art) under Jules Dalou and at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice. Specialising primarily in portrait busts made from terracotta, she won numerous medals for her modelling. This life-size idealised sculpture depicting a Venetian fisher-boy was exhibited in 1893 at the Royal Academy and the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, receiving critical acclaim.

Nyoirin Kannon 1680 Edo period Nyoirin Kannon is a Japanese form of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. One of Japan's most popular deities, Nyoirin Kannon is associated with the granting of wishes. Stone figures such as this were erected as an act of worship in the grounds of shrines or small temples. The sculpture is inscribed 'Made for the deceased Lady Believer Jo-oku Isei.

Dharmachakra (Wheel of the Law) 600-800 Ancient Kingdom of Dvaravati In Buddhism, the Wheel of the Law is a symbolic representation of the teachings of the Buddha. It particularly signifies the first teaching he gave after his enlightenment at Sarnath, near Varanasi. This is referred to as the first turning of the wheel of dharma. Large wheels were erected on pillars both in India and the Buddhist kingdom of Dvaravati, Thailand.
