#conflict&democracy
I spoke with UN Secretary-General António Guterres today. In this time of rising conflict, Canada is ready to lead.

We will build coalitions, defend democracy, and stand up for our values on the world stage. As others step back from global leadership, Canada is stepping up.

The struggle between authoritarianism and liberal democracy is an enduring part of American history. We are currently living through another chapter of this long running conflict. We've made progress towards being a multiracial democracy, but democracy has never been universally accepted here 6/x

I’ve come to believe that we need to gather considerable forces and a campaign to demand the removal of face masks by ICE, Border Patrol, FBI and police.

It is a practice in conflict with the principles of transparency & accountability that are central to the concept of democracy.
Video on social media shows an immigration agent pulling a gun in Little Village and holding it to the side — which is not an appropriate or safe way to hold a gun. (Among other issues.)

“Nonpartisanship” may sound good in a vacuum, but it ignores the fundamental reality of American politics right now: The conflict over whether or not the country should actually be a democracy maps onto the conflict between the two major parties.

Democracy itself has become a partisan issue.
How can individuals and institutions still proudly declare that they are “nonpartisan” or “bipartisan”? In the current U.S. context, this means you are openly declaring that you don’t care about liberal democracy!

Americans have a caricatured view of democracy of something that has just always existed, and this is an unfortunate oversight. American history has always been a conflict between democracy and authoritarianism. Hopefully we emerge more democratic on the other side. 9/9

The war in Ukraine is not just another conventional conflict in Europe, but a fight for universal values of sovereignty, decolonization, and democracy.

A fuel supplier says $4M in gas vanished from its reserves, unpaid. Some allegedly ended up at "Freedom Fuel" stations Trump pitched as cheap gas amid his Iran conflict spiking oil prices.

Sound familiar? I fought against Trump's lies when he turned them against our democracy. (Link in reply)

We can stand with the Iranian people who support the cause of democracy and freedom without risking another conflict that sends another generation of American troops into combat.

The Gaza protests not only “provoked intense political conflict.” Liberal and Dem leaders are still calling them antisemites for caring about liberal principles like human rights and international law…and they expect these same kids to come defend liberal democracy!

I’ve spent nearly two decades working in conflict zones & emerging markets, watching democracy unravel worldwide.
Now I’m writing a book about the global conflict upon us & what each of us can do to stop it.

Each time our nation has advanced closer to the more inclusive, pluralist, multi-racial democracy to which we’ve aspired at our best, that advance was preceded by a period of crisis and conflict.

This time is no different. A better democracy is on the other side of this crisis.

Eyes on the prize

There is absolutely nothing old or consolidated about *multiracial, pluralistic democracy* in America. It only started 60 years ago.

And the conflict over whether or not it should be allowed to endure and prosper has been the central fault line in U.S. politics ever since.

Like we get it, you need conflict and drama for narrative structure. But how about the conflict between authoritarianism and American democracy? That’s a pretty fucking big conflict right now.

Turns out these guys really do respect some traditions of Western Civilization! Sure, they hate art, culture, self-reflection, civic responsibility, and democracy, but they're game for some good old Catholic/Protestant conflict.
NEW: The Pentagon today invited more than 3,500 employees to attend a Good Friday service at its in-house chapel.

Except it’s only for Protestants, not Catholics. www.huffpost.com/entry/news-l...

Specifically, *right-wing white evangelicals* have been fed decades of lies by a hyperorganized apparatus of political organizations, churches, televangelists, and related organizations and influencers that a liberal, pluralistic, diverse democracy is in direct conflict with their religious freedom.
No. Christians feel persecuted because there is a vast media apparatus telling them that they are persecuted. There is no evidence whatsoever of large-scale discrimination against Christians in this country.
Interesting story that gets to the heart of why many Christians feel persecuted in the U.S.: The secular elite find many of their views abhorrent and uncouth

Until the press learns that the existential conflict that they are OBLIGATED to cover is NOT Republicans versus Democrats, but Democracy versus Authoritarianism, they will continue to be complicit in the erosion of American democracy from within.

Never forget the Russian troll farms didn’t just share propaganda from the right. They shared anything that sewed confusion and conflict, because all they need is a completely divided USA to defeat democracy and maintain authoritarianism.

Also on reflection Biden talked a lot about it, how the new global ideological conflict is authoritarianism vs democracy, but he didn't really follow through on it because he was fundamentally not really an internationalist

“The way this conflict played out has made something distressingly clear: We are facing nothing less than the collapse of American democracy as we have known it.”

This is a crisis of democracy. What will Dems do about it?
They need a bold and radical political reform agenda, or things will only get worse.

🔥🔥🔥

Beto has the fire.
This is the fight Democrats want to see in their leaders-it’s what we NEED in this moment.

Not the sleepy haze of Chuck Schumer, who’s still waiting for the conflict to present itself.

Democracy is on the line. LFG!!!

Step down, Chuck.

i think it's very cool that the mayor declared conflict but all of the councillors who belong to the mayor's political party did not declare conflict. i love it when democracy is functional and good.
ABC just voted to ignore the Integrity Commissioner's recommendations and let Ken Sim completely off the hook for Misuse of Office and Harassing Conduct.

On October 17th, we're going to elect @stephanieformayor.bsky.social and restore integrity at City Hall.

I don't think this is actively rooting for Trump so much as it is pure cynicism and solipsism. Our political press is dominated by people who have no real commitment to democracy but relish conflict and feel generally irritated by the earnest progressives in their social milieu.
The political press we need: hounding trump & republicans endlessly about his felony convictions, his history of sexual violence, and his attempts to overthrow the government

The political press we have:
