Now the fact that we're increasingly looking at UK production like Harland and Wolf integrated into a Europe-wide military industrial complex through firms like Navantia that is coordinated by Brussels doesn't mean the UK must Rejoin. But it does mean that in MIC terms London does not call the shots

Ours was built in 1952 and owned by a succession of Harland and Wolf and Shorts engineers, so I am reasonably happy that it will not spontaneously combust but also ALL THE DOORFRAMES ARE DIFFERENT HEIGHTS.

In February and March 1912, H&W were rushing to complete Titanic, but Thomas Andrews had plenty of other matters to deal with, including complaints about the canteen menu, ‘idling’ workers and having to stand in for Lord Pirrie.

So whilst the media fret about milestones becoming millstones the government gets on with governing and saving jobs at Hitachi, potentially Harland and Wolf and possibly British Steel. news.sky.com/story/harlan...

Went small scale Irish viral (about 2k likes) for sharing my family’s experience of sectarianism in Harland and Wolf and had a menacing phone call to where I worked at the time accusing me of sectarianism. Had much bigger tweet about a multi lingual barista in Stansted & the hate was *unbelievable*
Had people who told me they envied me whenever tweets went viral on twitter but it was SO stressful! The insults, the “well, actuallys” and the inevitable death threats regardless of the tweet, it just wasn’t worth the anxiety.
Baby, going viral on Twitter was always TRAUMATIC. I don’t think we talk about that enough.

And actually, I kinda feel it’s like that on any platform. Even when going viral is what you think you wanted, it very quickly escalates from “whee!!!” to “uh oh” to death threats.

The Orange Order hiding from the rain in their Orange Hall just as their compatriots hid in Harland and Wolf shipyard to avoid joining their British Army to fight fascism in WW2.The Irish citizens on the Garvaghy Road haven't moved an inch.

Heading home a day late from Northern Ireland because of an unexplained flight cancellation. But it’s still an amazing place.

Luton has rightly been reported as a major UK-wide story. Other important closures affecting sectors that should be central to the green transition haven't been given that coverage - eg Grangemouth refinery in Scotland, Port Talbot in South Wales and Harland and Wolf in Northern Ireland.

I think mine was when NI troubles broke out in very late 60s (1969?). My Dad had been sent to work at Harland & Wolf shipyard in Belfast. I'd just turned 5 and started following news bulletins.
What's the first major news story you remember as a child?

Chernobyl blowing up, because we were in Bulgaria at the time. The Miner’s Strike. Challenger blowing up. Constant Cold War bleakness.

Both my grandfathers worked on the Titanic at Harland and Wolf. One in drawing office, one was a welder. I have memories of them arguing over who was at fault (with a little bit of class politics thrown in) when I was very young.

I am, tourism certainly helps but its not the only thing, for example Navantia (state owned ships and arms giant) the other day bought Harland and Wolf in Belfast, the ship yard that was once the seat of Protestant supremacism in Ireland
