Minky Couture Week 9 high school star athletes of the week
#### Football
**Titan Borchardt, Hurricane (Jr.)**
Hurricane’s 7-0 start to the season has been one of the big stories of the year so far, and junior Titan Borchart is a big reason.
His versatility has been a big weapon that the Tigers have leaned on throughout their winning streak.
“Titan is a Swiss Army knife for us. We find many different ways to get him the ball. He plays three different positions offensively and has big-play potential anytime he has the ball in his hands,” said Hurricane coach Jerry Cowan.
Last week in Hurricane’s 38-21 win over Pine View, Borchardt carried the ball 11 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns in addition to two receptions for 57 yards.
#### Volleyball
**Lei’lani Saleapaga, Hunter (So.)**
A big part of Hunter’s undefeated streak so far has been the consistent and standout play of sophomore Lei’lani Saleapaga.
The outside hitter/right side has averaged nine kills, five assists, six blocks and five aces per game.
“(She’s) very quiet but her playing roars on the court. She has led by example and is a clutch player that turns the game around for the Wolverines,” said Hunter coach Ma’afu Suliafu, who said Saleapaga plays like a veteran despite being a sophomore.
“Lei, as she’s known on the team, brings confidence to the program but especially to those playing alongside her. Lei’s versatility to hit at every position at the net is what makes her unique. Her back court, not to mention, is also key to the success of the Lady Wolverines this year,” said Suliafu.
#### Girls Soccer
**Myka Page, Bountiful (Sr.)**
Led by standout midfielder Myka Page, Bountiful is hitting its stride with the playoffs just around the corner as the defending state champs are looking like the team to beat again.
Page ranks third in 5A in goals with 19 this season and second in assists with 12. Last week in a big 4-0 win over Brighton, the Ole Miss commit notched a goal and two assists.
“Myka is a versatile, complete player whose commitment to winning shows in every phase of the game, from scoring goals to setting up teammates and providing key defensive support. Myka is a quiet leader who consistently lets her work ethic and style of play dictate the tempo of the match. She is a true game changer when she is on the field and an even better person off the field,” said Bountiful coach Kris Hamlet.
Page was named a Deseret News first-team all-stater as a junior last season, but already this season she’s surpassed her goal contributions from a year ago.
#### Boys cross-country
**Jeff Hazard, Northridge (Sr.)**
Jeff Hazard turned in another outstanding performance last week at the Valhalla Invitational at Layton Commons Park.
The senior finished first with a time of 15:26.74, crossing the line 18 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher from Viewmont.
The win came two weeks after his runner-up finish at the Davis District Championship.
“Jeffrey is obviously a tremendous athlete. He’s also a great student, a humble person and a great teammate. He’s been a leader on our team from his first race as a freshman due to his athletic ability,” said Northridge coach Curt Bentley. “He has always been a quiet example of dedication, kindness and stability. It’s been fun to watch him grow into a more vocal leadership role during the last two years. He is well-respected by all of his teammates and competitors alike. He’s a joy to coach, does things the right way and will go far.”
Hazard finished runner-up at last year’s 5A state championships and will again be one of the runners to beat at next month’s state meet.
#### Girls cross-country
**Lyda Taylor, Rich (Sr.)**
Rich senior Lyda Taylor has backed up her 1A state title from a year ago with another outstanding season so far this fall.
In addition to top five finishers earlier this season at the Border Wars and Husky Run, Taylor won the Provo Kiwanis meet this past Saturday, finishing with a time of 18:56.48. She crossed the line 42 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher.
Taylor dominated the 1A state meet a year ago, winning by 55 seconds. She’ll be the favorite again later this fall at the state meet.
“Lyda is an amazing person. She is the hardest worker. She is disciplined both on and off the track. She is humble and coachable. She is a leader in the classroom as well as a leader for the cross-country team. She puts in extra time and effort into everything she does. She is going to be a success in life no matter where life takes her,” said Rich coach Jason Thornock.
#### Girls Tennis
**Maci Meier, Timpview (So.)**
A year after earning a No. 4 seed in the 5A state tournament as a freshman at second singles and advancing all the way to the semifinals, Meier hasn’t skipped a beat in her sophomore season amid tougher competition.
Meier heads into this week’s 5A state tournament as the No. 4 seed again, this time against the No. 1 singles for the T-Birds.
“Maci’s importance to our team cannot be overstated. As our top player, she consistently demonstrates a dedication and commitment to being the best she can possibly be both on and off the court,” said Timpview coach Emmet Hart. “She’s a leader and a friend to everyone on the team, and brings an energy and competitive fire to every match. That sets a great example for the rest of our players. She’s shown others how to battle through adversity in tough matches and come out the other side a stronger and more resilient player all year.”
Meier owns a 14-2 record heading into the state tournament.
#### Boys Golf
**Levi King, Carbon (Jr.)**
Carbon junior Levi King heads into the final week of the regular season clinging to a ultra-slim lead atop the Region 13 standings.
With his 72 in last week’s match, King’s stroke average sits at 74.0, narrowly ahead of teammate a second-place golfer Dayton King. Region play wraps up on Wednesday.
“Levi is someone who is always looking for ways to better his game. Even though he’s a fantastic ball striker, he excels with course management and has a solid short game. He never settles and continually pushes himself and the rest of the team to improve week after week,” said Carbon coach Robbi Etzel.
As a sophomore last season, King finished in a tie for ninth place at the 3A state tournament, a finish he’ll be looking to improve upon this season.
#### Baseball
**Gerardo Lopez, Bryce Valley (Sr.)**
Gerardo Lopez’s strong performance in the past couple of weeks has helped Bryce Valley build some momentum heading into the 1A state tournament, which gets underway this week.
Lopez started each of Bryce Valley’s last three games, earning two wins while recording nine strikeouts in six innings with a 1.05 ERA.
He had a great week at the plate as well, batting .600 — including a home run on senior night in a 9-2 win over Wayne.
“Gerardo has grown into a great player and leader and we appreciate all his hard work,” said Bryce Valley coach Tyler Chappell.
For the season, Lopez is batting .418 with seven doubles, two home runs and 24 RBIs.
