Dear Lord this is such a poor way to approach JS&MN which is delightful precisely because it is very much written in the style of the time period it's observing, where social etiquette and manners were much more important than magic
This thought inculcated by many years of conversations I've had with supposed fans of The Lord of the Rings but brought about specifically by a conversation about Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell in which "the story" was fun but only happened in the last third of the book.

I enjoy a digression more than many folks — Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is one of my favorite books — but I think the digression still has to Do A Thing. In JS&MN, all the footnotes add up into an entirely different historical story happening beneath the main plot.
we need a name for this: the 100-150 pages in some KU books that are there strictly for page count, those meandering scenes that go no where.

Piranesi is spare where JS&MN is florid. It shares some sensibilities, but it is elegant in a way that JS&MN is not. Mind you, I love JS&MN, so please apply windage.

Who has read Piranesi by Susanna Clarke? I just finished it. I'm a huge fan of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. No spoilers but I didn't like it nearly as much as JS&MN, though I enjoyed the ending.

Kidding aside, Kuang said that she wanted Babel to be in "conversation" with JS&MN. So she adopted its tone, settings and conventions but uses them to explicitly instruct the reader (whom she does not trust) that racism and colonialism are bad.

On ep 6 of JS and MN and wow they are just radically reducing the Greysteels’ role and cutting to the chase with them, can’t say I really object

I went with JS&MN for the book not because it's a favorite but because I've been thinking about rereading it. Maybe I'd feel like doing the footnotes on a desert island.
