BTW this means no funding for GSS, ANES, or PSID. GSS 2026 is in the field now, but then it looks like that's it. Devastating for social science.
NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light.

Here are the numbers of OPTs in recent years - caveat this is from Trump rule document so take with grain of salt.

Trump would have veto power over any such law. There’s no way Congress has the votes to override his veto. And I’d even doubt even a Democratic majority Congress has the votes to pass such a law.

My sense is it is a done deal until maybe next presidency. Even then, I’m not optimistic.

Please correct me if I'm wrong: This would take effect in 90 days, giving the new (hopefully Democratic) Congress one day to block it.

I also think the presidents of some large, red state universities might have a few comments, given that they also rely heavily on international students.

Very interesting new article linking historical racism and contemporary attitudes.
Why do some communities maintain historical patterns of racial exclusion while others change? We show how Second Wave KKK presence in historical "sundown towns" shaped racial attitudes through two key mechanisms: adolescent attitudinal imprinting and residential sorting. @sfjournal.bsky.social

Terrible news for higher education. This will effectively kill OPT, which is major incentive for international students. $70k fee university must pay. Seems like game over for OPT.

Will go into effect after 30 day public comment and 60 day implementation delay.
Trump admin's new rule adding prohibitively expensive new fees for "OPT"—temporary work authorization program for international students and new grads in the United States—is out.
Would require colleges to pay $70,000 for year one. $30,000 for years two and three combined for STEM fields.

Disturbing numbers

Surely universities can do better?
