In 1994 I published an essay "What Is an Electronic Author?" to take up claims the hypertext and other digital technologies were the electronic manifestations of post-structuralist theory's decentering of meaning, writing, and authorship. The essay's concluding sentences speak to our moment.

Currently reading two book manuscripts that *I think* augur a new academic genre. Something like Quit Lit but you can't quit. There you stay, in a broken academy, working. The system can't reproduce itself or you, but there you are. Such humor, pathos, and wit. Any existing titles seem like this?

Ask any scholar who the most prominent names in their field are; they can rattle of dozens of names, both historical and contemporary. Now ask who the most prominent *teachers* are in their field. The list is far shorter, if they can name anyone at all.

I would like media to care more about the reality that tech tycoons want to kill people than what they’re imagining about AI wanting to kill people. We have multi-millionaires (with support from billionaires!) calling for ethnic cleansing, a thing that has happened in living memory. Not theoretical!

Are they threatening trans users directly? No. Trans folks in the US have been targeted repeatedly. That's awful and you have my sympathy.

Within the context of a single post we wouldn't consider it a direct threat or targeting a protected category. Ie send trans folks to concentration camps.

It has a vibes based definition of “working class.” That part is odd. The interesting bit is what kind of affordability issues work best with the non college low income cohort it’s focused on.
