There is something particularly troubling about the abbreviation falling on #Palestine/#Palestinians themselves. At a time when Palestinian political subjectivity and recognition are fiercely contested, “Pal” linguistically erases them.
“I pro-Pal” also turns a political position or act of solidarity into a social category, flattening very different people, organisations and motivations into a seemingly homogeneous group. This is not necessarily intentional, but its discursive effects matter.
I find the increasingly common use of “pro-Pal” in #Italianmedia uncomfortable. It is presented as shorthand for “pro-Palestinian” or “pro-Palestina”, but language matters: Palestinians lose even their full name and become a three-letter label. Interestingly, Israel is always named in full.
