Malaysia is putting people on a Myanmar Navy ship, UMS Moattama, and sending them back into the hands of the military they fled. Calling it “repatriation” does not make it safe. For anyone at risk of persecution, this is refoulement by sea.

Malaysia calls the process “voluntary” but has not said how consent was assessed in detention or what happens to anyone who refuses. The first ships are leaving before the most basic questions have been answered. A disgraceful handover to Myanmar’s military.
