the experience of COVID really drove this home for me. It wans't the apocalypse, life went on, but a million people died and there were enormous social costs, some of which continue to this day and then when it was done most people were like "let's never think about that again"
Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

this is basically kotkin's argument about stalin: he enjoyed tormenting and murdering his comrades, precisely because he had fucked up on an impossible, monumental scale, and he spent the rest of his life torturing anyone who might ever point out that he had done so
oh and he especially enjoyed this after he was mad at them because they thought he might have made some mistakes when he caused the largest manmade famine in history that killed literally tens of millions of people.

Mao was bad. It’s insane that that’s a potentially divisive statement on this website.

extremely sad that only about a tenth of the people who see this statement will recognize it as the status quo ante of NATO. this is exactly why NATO exists and most people are going to chalk this in his win column.

i am genuinely bewildered by people who say that the rise of white nationalism in the republican party is a response to the "woke left." like, did the woke left cause pat buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign? is the woke left why steve king had a long career in congress?

MGP is just...really dumb, right? Like...really, really dumb?
The surrounding issue- managing the recovery of a threatened species in a way that minimizes impacts on a resource humans use- is tricky.

But “sea lions belong in the sea” as a reason to kill sea lions in adjacent-to-the-sea rivers? My god.

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft.
Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1
