I've started doing something similar for fun. In this paper with a vector image I embedding a picture of my son with a balloon. It's faint but if you zoom in you can see it (you have to download the PDF). It's open access though.

I feel like people are focusing on the extinction thing too much. I saw someone say: Even if it causes a nuclear exchange that is unlike to lead to extinction.

I think that starting a nuclear war is pretty damn bad. Extinction shouldn't be the threshold for concern. It should be much much lower.
echoing @theophite.bsky.social…everyone is saying this?

anyway you don’t need it to be kabuki theater to roll your eyes at the extinction thing, you just need them to be kinda stupid. but i think people are hyperventilating about the wrong threats and 99.9% of people shouldn’t bother worrying
Driving me crazy that a lot of very smart people aren't entertaining the idea that the **AI might kill us all** narrative is kabuki theater -- orchestrated by some of the world's richest people, whose net worth is tied up in people believing their technology is just on the cusp of super intelligence

This but the advice they are asking about is: Should I try to become a tenured track professor or sell my soul and go into industry.
The problem is that bright students considering a PhD generally ask a tenured faculty member for career advice, which is like asking a Powerball winner if it's a good idea to spend your last five bucks on a lottery ticket.

I live in California ,and my wife and I mailed in our ballots the week before the prop 50 vote. I normally get emails/texts telling me the progress of my ballot but this time I got nothing. So I emailed our county on Monday and heard back from a woman named Yen with questions on Tuesday.
Yeah my county board of elections put out a statement recommending everyone use dropboxes to deliver their ballots in the general election because they received several ballots too late to be counted even though the postmark on the envelopes was well before election day.
From the New York Times: "Here’s How the Postal Service Could Refuse to Deliver Your Mail Ballot"

The Trump Administration is trying to disenfranchise Washingtonians. We blocked their illegal attack in court and will continue to defend our elections.

I think it's important to note that Silicon Valley here refers to the billionaires who control it and not the people that live there. If you see below the democrats have consistently wont the elections in that congressional district.

The weird thing is she's been married twice but on her third marriage. I have to think she's in some kind of polycule.
O'KEEFE: Is Vance your guy in 2028?

RNC ATTENDEE: My guy is who Donald Trump endorses

O'KEEFE: So it's up to him to tell you?

WOMAN: That's exactly right. People call us a cult. I don't care.

It me! I was making the biologicals! The weapons!

Truthfully, I use AI to develop tools to help with drug discovery. When I tried to use Fable it kept telling me "something something biological something reverting back to Opus" so I'm assuming that I represent one or more of these efforts.

Here's a gift link to my 9/11 essay in the NYT.

Civil libertarians long warned that before giving government new powers, we should consider how an administration with authoritarian ambition might abuse them.

We were told that America was too exceptional to elect such a person.

Well here we are.
Opinion | Civil Libertarians Knew This Would Happen. We Should Have Listened. (Gift Article)
The civil libertarians’ warnings have come true.

I live in California so I'll just mail in my vote against republicans in every election... over broken glass.
I will crawl over broken glass that’s on fire while eating Taylor Farms lettuce to vote against Republicans in every election for the rest of my life

To the people who suggest companies would rather treat than cure a disease because it's more profitable, I give you disease prevention. Where's the money in that?
It's a cancer vaccine! A literal miracle made by many hands.
The number of cases of cervical cancer reported in Scotland among women given the HPV vaccine at 12-13 years of age is now zero.

Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero.

Zero.

Just remember that we invaded Iraq based on the 1% doctrine. The 1% chance that Iraq could give islamic terrorists a nuclear weapon.
Really looking forward to the “the chance that we kill all humans is above 10%” slide next to the $30 trillion TAM in the IPO filing.

Confirming all of my priors here.
One of those things you were pretty sure was true but now you have causal quantiative evidence in the American Economic Review: business schools trained CEOs to pay workers less in pursuit of maximizing shareholder value

LLM Companies selling AI to the Average Person: Math is really hard, and I’m proudly ignorant of math in a way that would seem embarrassing to admit about any other topic. So people who can do math are really smart. LLM solves math problems I cannot even comprehend. LLM must be smart.
Something I'm interested in: why are OpenAI, Anthropic, et al so interested in mathematics research now? Surely it's not about money

And not for nothing, there's a lot of overlap between the two.

You can get these people on board for discrete policy items like pesticide bans maybe, but they are animated by a belief that if everyone just followed their elaborate health mythology, we'd all be cured and live forever.

And the fact that someone isn't and is sick? Their fault.
