Okay, it's time for a proper intro thread, not just the one I whacked up there during the workday.

I'm Adele, I'm a law librarian by day and romance author by night. I talk occasionally about a bunch of stuff but a lot about books.

I'm about to talk about my books!
"Hair must be perfectly gelled. Nazi tattoos optional, but preferred."
Exclusive: The Pentagon is asking commanders to nominate troops to attend Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s “State of the Force” address this September, and says the servicemembers must meet waist-to-height requirements and exhibit “impeccable” grooming standards. https://on.wsj.com/3VwFKeF

I appreciate an old classmate wanting to read my books, but telling me they're only going to order in print and want to avoid Amazon - which, VALID - but then do the entire convo on FACEBOOK MESSENGER?

Um.

I'm not reopening an Ingram account for you, dude.

I've been thinking about this a lot because of all the talk about how Dolly Parton "didn't take sides" and I think she's proof that if you don't want to talk about politics you don't have to, but she took sides with her money & her actions and her side was pretty clear.

So is Sheeran's, I guess.
I fucking hate "I don't take sides" people, which is just siding with the oppressor and hoping you'll have plausible deniability. You're not apolitical, you're not neutral, you're just doing this:
According to too many,
there is white and then there is political
there is male and then there is political
there is capitalism and then there is political
there is straight and then there is political
there is cis and then there is political
there is non-disabled and then there is political

PSA: No Kings is a coalition, not an org, and it does not do fundraising appeals for itself. Partner orgs raise money for costs we're incurring to put it on. But if you get a text from "NO KINGS" or a PAC you've never heard of before asking for $ that is a scam and you should block/shame away.

Last I checked, the entire series was available on Hoopla, too - so if your library has it, check it out!
Tiffany Reisz’s Men At Work series is sexy, subversive, and turns tropes on their heads. We did a deep dive back in season four.

You can get book one of the series, HER HALLOWEEN TREAT, for $4 in (DRM-free!) audio today.

I think the political left should be the loudest voice calling for an AI model development pause, frontier pacing, and mandatory third party audits right now. Put aside the doomer stuff (though I think it’s plausible), we just found out that OpenAI’s agents committed a pretty major felony!

Nope. Can't do it. Not even as a sarcastic bit.

These guys always want to excuse their Ai use with “It’s just a tool, I want to use all the tools at my disposal,” and so on. But they never want to to walk about how the tool was made. Or how the tool does the thing it does.

And there’s a good reason for that...

"Tax revenue" is the new PR line for data centers; it's true in a handful of counties nationwide but nowhere else. 3 of 95 counties in Virginia work this way, the rest got screwed by a $2 billion revenue shortfall. goodjobsfirst.org/data-center-...

Happy Rice Truck Day to all who observe
4 yrs ago today, a family member managed a truly spectacular own goal, splintered his domestic bliss, & in the process, united the world for a day.

On popular request, I shall now recreate the livetweet thread from that day

So gather around children, for this is the tale of The Rice Truck Saga

Great. Maryland's MARC system is rerouting my train one stop before its previous terminus (my stop) and taking it to Baltimore. The solution is to then switch to the Metro (more time, more money) or switch to the later train (WHICH I WOULD TAKE ANYWAY FROM MY USUAL STATION BUT THEN I'D BE LATE).

it's not an exaggeration to say that jk rowling is the world's most powerful and prominent transphobe outside of elon musk

it's easy to not buy a tesla and it's easy to not watch the harry potter tv show
As a new Harry Potter trailer makes the rounds, it bears repeating that there’s no way to watch this show without supporting J.K. Rowling’s bigotry and the structural violence she’s inflicting on the trans community.
There is no ethical consumption of HBO’s Harry Potter series
You can’t without supporting Rowling’s transphobic bigotry.

When there are multiple stories about data centers simply building gas turbines without permits, PROVING they can’t be trusted, you’d be a fool to trust them. This is not paranoia, it’s pragmatism.
I'll add some nuance here — most local pushback against data centers is actually quite fluent, and not grounded in the more wild-eyed rhetoric you see on social media. Very often, the core premise is a simple, correct one: you can't trust what Big Tech says in its promises to a local community.
It’s a popular revolt against the tech oligarchs, not about data centers per se.

Yes, streaming sites also use data centers.

Yes, data centers don’t actually use up a lot of drinking water.

Accuracy is good for its own sake. But still, right or wrong about data centers themselves isn’t the point.

Mr. B has the Indigo Girls' first album playing. It has me remembering that moment when I was driving the NH backroads to my Pheasant Lane Mall second job and I heard that song on the radio.

I DASHED through that massive mall to get to a store where I could flutter through a bin and buy that album.

Journalists need to stop describing these incidents in terms implying software has agency and intent. It does not. The people who created a faulty and dangerous product are the ones responsible for whatever happens, and must be held to account, with punitive financial penalties for damage done.

seems like a good time to remind people that Niemöller (the author of the confession memorialized in the "First they came for the Communists" poem) was a Hitler supporter, and made that confession after spending time in the Dachau concentration camp
The Milo stuff is the perfect picture of fascism. You think you're protected because you go as big as you can on racism, you spend years harassing the movement's perceived enemies, you even disavow your own sexuality. They'll still throw you in a cage over the tiniest disagreement already forgotten.
