Emma Kaliya reminds us that if leadership isn’t intentionally handed over, movements stagnate and hard-won gains risk being lost.
This means creating real space, sharing power, mentoring without gatekeeping, and trusting young women with responsibility, not just visibility.

As of Sept 2023, 46 AfricanUnion member states had ratified the Maputo Protocol (the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa).

However, laws only matter when implemented. Domestication, budgeting & accountability is key.

African women are not waiting to be invited into power, we are reclaiming it. The African Young Women’s Leadership Summit 2025 convened young feminist leaders to strengthen collective leadership amid growing backlash.
