was watching this video essay about how critical media analysis is dying in favour of us needing to have our own values reflected to us in the media we consume, and it had me thinking a lot about how fanfic comments have swayed in the last few years.

The idea of a mute green witch Seokjin, who has moved to the forest alone as he deals with PTSD after an accident, and OT6 woodland cat colony shifters came to me when I saw this beautiful moodboard. I wrote a 500 word Drabble where we meet Seokjin and Joon, but now I want to keep going uh oh.

The smell of oranges hit him first.

Feral cat colonies, for all his research was worth, were not supposed to smell like oranges. Nor were they supposed to be so well groomed with no one out here except Mother Nature to groom them.

He’d moved his business to the forest not too long after the accident when he could no longer bear the pitiful stares from his parents.

Seokjin wasn’t doing well, or so he was told.

He’d sold his shop and moved it online, which was actually just smart business in 2025. For all of the organic nature of their magic, Green Witches were as easily taken in by a cute Etsy storefront as any other. He’d actually doubled his sales since he’d gone digital, and without the overhead of rent nor the need for window shopper pleasing physical stock, he was making a killing.

And still, Seokjin was not doing well.

He hadn’t been able to leave his parent’s apartment in the city since the accident. Every time he did, it was as though his senses went into overdrive - the trains and cars too intensely loud, like battle drums. His eyes would sting with sensitivity, and had it always been so bright outside in the day time? He’d tried to wear a pair of sunglasses the one time his mother had managed to drag him to the magical convenience store on their corner, and it hasn’t landed well.

She just wanted him to be well, and as we know, Seokjin was not doing well.

In the forest where his new cottage lay, he could breathe. Perhaps the green magic in his blood was just more deeply attuned to the roughage of Baltic Fir than it was to that of the city - petrol, human fury, rush hour. Or perhaps it was easier to escape his looping memories here, where the air smelled like impending snow, rainfall, wildflowers, and not petrol. Some fury, but more in the line of nature’s terrifying beauty. Green Witches like Seokjin’s bread and butter.

The first cat had appeared on the kitchen table on the very first morning. He’s had no fear with his loud mrow that rippled across the dining space like a slow avolanche. Seokjin had paused with his toast with butter and marmalade half way to his mouth.

“Well hello there.”

He signed it of course because he hasn’t actually spoken since the accident. The white fluffy cat that was somehow well built, if you could call a cat that, had dipped his head to the side and blinked painfully slow. For a moment, Seokjin felt like he’s understood his elementary KSL, a fiddling of eager but unpracticed hands which still needed to finger spell the majority of his words.

The white cat had knocked the butter dish over on its exit journey across the kitchen, and a spider plant had toppled out the window behind him.

“G-O-D of D-E-S-T-R-U-C-T-I-O-N,” he’d said with his awkward hands, scribbling a note to himself to find the proper signs online later in the day.
