I'm Minna. Excuse me while I unpack my bags a bit.

I spend my free time working on a webcomic "Book of Change". It is a weird mix of sci-fi themes, talking magical books and bitter sweet feels~

I also love to share comics, art and writing related posts.

here is how i plan ahead specifically for lettering so i don't clog up areas i want to put the bubbles. placing the text as early as possible like this helps you consider the entire panel and avoid making decisions you might need to undo or work around if you waited until the very end to letter.

Was working on an updated thumbnail image for BoC book two.

I was happily inking away, when my friends pointed out that the thumbnail was unintentionally kinda... shippy. (Darn aroace brain.)

I'll try to salvage it and finish it later. For the actual thumbnail, back to the drawing board I go. -.-"

I think this is a symptom of just how long creating a web comic can take. Stuff can feel like it's dragging when it happened over three pages... or feel rushed in 30.

And in the case of comic artists, they’re forced to either

1) take several years to finish one book due to balancing a day job that enables them to survive

2) create multiple books at once, putting them at higher risk of early burnout/injury, or

3) have generational wealth and/or massive savings

It's because we all have day jobs, advances are pennies, publishers don't market, one underperforming book tanks your career, and we're expected to be well-tuned brand machines on social media websites designed to suck our souls dry.
Tweet text: what are peoples thoughts on why fiction writers are producing so much less work than in the past, say up into the 80s but moreso w/r/t the writers of the early part of the 20th c. for the most part we dont have major writers who publish 10, 15, 20+ books anymore.

While @gritrook.art was visiting during the summer, we went through my old sketches... and found some gems!

Behold! Very early proto-Murmeli from before "Book of Change" was a thing!

It is fun to see the art (and character) evolution here!

Compilation of really old Murmeli sketches from my teens. Most scribbled on back of worksheets and random pieces of paper. The essence of the character is there, even if most of these are VERY different to his modern design. Also you can clearly see the art evolution here as I was trying to push my style. First drawings where Murmeli is starting to look more like his modern self. He still didn't have a story yet, so he kept doing cameos in dreams and random what-if scenarios. Sketches of Murmeli for an OCT ref sheet. This iteration had a lot of small details that I decided to drop from his BoC version. Also say hello to Jen's hand! A panel from an OCT comic. Participating in the competition gave me a lot of practice drawing Murmeli. It also taught me that maybe I had the patience to do comics after all...

Been nyooming on the thumbnails (a.k.a sketching the rough page with dialoque and layout) for BoC book 2!

In book 1, I ran out of buffer in mid-story. Because thumbnails require brainpower, being stuck in that step caused delays.

To be fair, I have had pleeenty time to plan book 2 in my head~~ >:D

If you’re tempted to use genAI to brainstorm for writing stories, please just talk abt your story to friends instead!

Friends who have good story sense that you trust, writer friends who will give you honest feedback, friends who care & get excited about your ideas with you! I know it’s scary +
