Our @bmj.com editorial sums up why physical punishment should be outlawed everywhere: decades of research shows it harms children in numerous ways, it increases the risk of physical abuse, and it violates children’s human rights. There are no benefits.

The evidence is clear: physical punishment doesn't work, and is instead linked to poorer mental health, substance misuse, antisocial behaviour, and slower cognitive development.

It isn't punishment - it's abuse.
